(CNN) -- At least one person was injured Monday after a person fired shots inside the Washington Navy Yard, the U.S. Navy said.
An official told CNN's Barbara Starr that "several" people sustained injuries.
The incident occurred at 8:20 a.m. Authorities say there is an "active shooter" on the scene.
Several shots were fired at the Naval Sea Systems Command headquarters, in southeast Washington, D.C., the Navy said.
The Navy first informed the public of the incident in a Twitter message. Emergency personnel were on the scene and a "shelter in place" order has been issued for Navy Yard personnel.
The headquarters -- the workplace for about 3,000 people -- is the largest of the Navy's five system commands.
It has a fiscal year budget of nearly $30 billion.
"With a force of 60,000 civilian, military and contract support personnel, NAVSEA engineers, builds, buys and maintains the Navy's ships and submarines and their combat systems," the Navy said.
I love how CNN fills their story with random information like the Navy's fiscal year budget. Because that is *exactly* the information I was looking for when I clicked on that story.
And...new cue the dumbasses who claim this is because of the troops overseas and it will start happening in other states because we spread ourselves too thin...and backtrack when I call them on it.

I know. There's still a lot of chaos and I'm seeing a lot of different reports now. I always tell myself not to believe everything I read right away when there's breaking news like this but it's so hard not to do that!
Shitty security. CNN was reporting that it was unknown how the gunman got past.
I have authorized access to the AFB where my H works, but most of the time they glance at my spouse ID for about half a second and say "OK, have a nice day" and I'm just like "Really? That's it?"
I mean, I'm certainly not asking for a TSA-esque patdown or any of that extreme abuse, but I do wonder why, especially after what happened on that Army base in Texas, they don't want to look inside of my vehicle for firearms. That's a security measure I'd consider reasonable.
you basically walk right in. they check IDs but anyone can get in really. there's a great museum and a ship you can tour, we used to take school groups there all the time. i've taken my family there too.

And technically, that's not supposed to happen if they don't have DoD-issued ID. (I've done it too) Enforcement is pretty weak, which was my point to the other posters.
Kinda lurker here. I was reading this thread with interest b/c my brother works in the affected Navy Yard building.
I worked on an army base near DC soon after 11 Sep, when base security was really high and they were searching every car. Traffic was backed up for miles and miles outside the gates, onto the highway. It wasn't uncommon to sit in line for an hour to get through security.
They do step it up after major terrorism-related events. They did that for about six weeks after Bin Laden was killed at my DH's AFB.
