We actually should. It was degrading infrastructure that made the floods worse than they should have been (several old dams burst), but guns are more sexy to lobby about.
Woah! are 1200 people really missing? I've heard nothing of this
There is way too much apathy about most things in this country. We're just not the people who are apathetic about them. Climate change is horrible. So is gun violence. We can absolutely pay attention to both of these causes and care about both of them.
sigh... I know. I'm just touchy this morning. I retract my earlier statements.
Why the hell are we arguing about the number of views a thread on flooding vs. gun violence are getting?
They are BOTH equally terrible, people. They both need action, albeit completely different kinds of action.
I think, pixy0stix, the reason that perhaps people 'appear' to be discussing the CO flooding less is that overall, its a less "political" issue. People agree that the flooding is awful, and people need help. But physically, there is nothing most people can do, at least at the moment. That doesn't make it right OR wrong, or any less important than the issue of gun violence.
I find the attempt to politicize this before we know basically anything about it pretty offputting.
So when *is* the right time to say "Gee, we have an awful lot of shootings in this country - we really ought to change that"? This evening? The next day? The next week? Next month? Never? I hear a lot of "this is not the time to talk about it" but very little "this IS the time."

And I think that's fine if someone wants to say that to ttt.
But to come in and act like outrage over gun crimes or this shooting is unwarranted because of the flooding in Colorado? Maybe it's because there are potentially 2 shooters still on the loose and I live way too close for comfort to NY, but FUCK THAT.

IMO, when we have the basic facts straight. Like I said, I'm waiting to see if the shooters were civilians or military.

Well, once again, there is another mass shooting. I'm not sure what more we need to know in order to say, holy fuck, something needs to be done.
I mean, I'm pretty sure the conversation is going to be all about gun control, better mental health access and improved childhood education again. Because it always is. BECAUSE ALL OF THE ABOVE needs to happen.

I think it's prudent to at least understand basic stuff like whether the shooters are military or civilian.

I'd like to know how someone claiming to be a member of the press, that is already in DC on a random Monday morning, doesn't know who Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton is.
We have several teams that work on site there--I wish they would send out an e-mail letting us know if everyone is accounted for or not
True but I believe this has now been confirmed by police. They IDed him by fingerprints since e apparently has a record.
I read on twitter (take that for what its worth) that he has a record dealing with firearms. That's why I don't think he would be military and I'm really surprised he would be a contractor.
Looks like a misdemeanor - reckless discharge of firearm. Not sure how much that would have prevented his hiring.
