H and I have said that we would love to go to a Superbowl. Where we differ is whether the teams playing matter. I say that just going to the game would be an experience and it doesn't matter who is playing. He would prefer to see his favorite team play but if they lose he would be miserable and end up ruining the trip for us. Would you look at getting tickets even if you don't know who is going to be playing?

I'd only pay for tickets if it was only my team. I'd maybe go for free, but depends on the teams and how the playoffs went. It would also be difficult for me to get the time off during that time of the year so I'd really only want to go if it was my team.
I am not an NFL fan, but I absolutely would go. I hope that next time the Giants make the Superbowl my husband will go (with or without me -- probably without me). I see it as a once-in-a-lifetime kind of thing, and I really hope my husband goes to one at some point.
But I can't imagine him being miserable if they lost. I mean, getting to see your team play in the Superbowl is huge, win or lose.
I want to go this year, because it is an experiment and may never happen again if it doesn't work in a cold weather (outdoor) stadium. It doesn't matter, with the game so close to where I live, what teams are playing. If my team ends up there, great. If not, oh well.
ETA: I have been to World Series games, and while I wasn't at the game where "my" team won the series, it was a pretty darn cool experience all around.
And there is mass transit from where I live to the stadium. It involves transfers and will be absolutely insane but still, no driving, no hotel necessary. Sign me up!
If we weren't doing the game at Wembley next week I would consider going to the Superbowl this year even with the cold weather. I have told H if the Steelers lose next week he better not let it ruin the rest of our trip. He gets very emotional when they don't win.
I've been to the college football national championship, and even though my team lost, it was still awesome. Just to be there with the energy and excitement, it was well worth it. It was also the Sugar Bowl, which has an excellent location for celebrating a game, win or lose. I've been to the sugar bowl twice, and both were worth it.
I would imagine the Super Bowl would be similar, but about 4 times the price. I'd still do it. Contemplated it last year, but h wasn't so keen on it. Too many ppl.
If I could go for FREE, I'd go no matter who is playing. If I had to pay, I'd want to go only if my team was playing. Now- as that's the Ravens and they just went... it was HARD to see a bunch of my friends go and we weren't able to. We just couldn't swing it- for many reasons. But I would have if I could have!!!

I wouldn't go this year though -- brrrrrrrrrr.
This, exactly. I would go because it's probably a neat experience. But I wouldn't go at all if there was any chance of my DH ruining the trip by being miserable. That's way too expensive of a trip to be ruined by bratty pouting.
Also agree that I would probably only go to a warm weather location.
I would go in a heartbeat! I wanted to go SO bad last year when the Ravens were in it. I think the only way that I would pay for tickets to the game is if my team (The Ravens) were playing in it, but if the tickets were free I wouldn't care who was playing. My husband promised me that the next time the Ravens went to the super bowl we could go!! I'm hoping I don't have to wait too long.
It's on our home state this year and MH who is a HUGE football freak wants to be nowhere near the meadowlands the week of the Super Bowl.
I am really fearful of that weekend. I have a feeling that being in the city is going to be godawful too.
He's already said there's no way in hell he's working in the city that week. It's not going to be pretty. I'd start stocking up on the beer and wine now! Or plan a vacation somewhere warm!

I keep hearing this, but ... isn't 75K extra tourists in early February still below the number of visitors during a Christmas weekend, the Fourth of July, etc.?

Well, the city is a ghost town Christmas weekend and over Fourth of July because so many of the residents leave. I'm not sure the same will be the case on Superbowl weekend... particularly because so many people will have plans to go away over MLK weekend or Presidents Day weekend, so Superbowl weekend isn't an ideal weekend to get away.
But seeing how much smaller events like UN week can fuck up everything, I can't say I'm thrilled about it.
honestly, yes. this is on our bucket list. DH has already been to the world series, so he's satisfied there. but i like football, and would love to go.
it's in NY this year, which would be convenient, except i don't want to freeze. i'd hold out for a better year.

No interest in going this year. Sooo cold! Wouldn't be opposed to going at some point as I think it could generally be fun with a group of friends but considering the hassle of getting tickets, dealing with a huge mob of drunken people, etc this isn't at the top of my wish list to experience. MH and I both love sports (watched several hours of redzone today) but tend to agree about this.

If you had asked 20 years ago? I'd go in a heartbeat. I've now developed such a dislike of crowds and dealing with the cattle press of this type of venue, I'd really, really have to want to see both teams playing and think it was going to be an earth shattering experience to get me out of my cushy chair.
