Holy crap! I missed the turn around in a half once. I doubled back, finished, and then pouted on a certain message board. Continuing and getting a 3:11 is bonkers. Good for her.
didn't you end up third overall at that race or something like that?
didn't you also miss a turn around for a full and end up BQ'ing anyway because you aged up or something?
ANYWAY, my point is that when I saw this on the today show this AM I thought of you specifically. lol.
(aside: wouldn't the headphones and the assistance/pacing from the biker prevent you from 'winning' though? I thought you couldn't do those things and win? or are those USAT&F rules that don't apply because this is Canada? Or do they just look the other way for smaller races? I've never been in the position to win so I've never read up on these things.)
The headphones rule is race specific, not across the board.
And I've read a few race reports (SkinnyRunner's specifically) of having the lead cyclist chatting with them along the way so I think its legit. As long as there is not true assistance - handing over water/food/whatever - I think its a gray area.
Ok, so looking again it doesn't sound like she says the biker was pacing her. I also don't think it's uncommon to have a biker in front of the first male/female showing them where to go, but I'm not sure at what point it becomes assistance, KWIM?
Guess they need a biker in front of the lead half runners too.

Wasn't the biker in front of her the whole way? That's how I read it.
Elite runners in the "Elite" category cannot wear headphones. This is not the case here. Under USATF rules you can absolutely win a race in a citizen category and wear them, if the race allows.

Plus, given the small size of the race (fewer than 200 people in the marathon category), I'm guessing that it was not a closed course. In that case, anyone could happen to be running or biking on the road/trail at the time of the race. There's nothing that race officials could do about it.
The last half that I did was on open roads. We had to move out of the way of cars the whole time.
I don't see why a bike pacer would prevent you from winning. Most races I've seen have a cyclist leading the front runners. I'm certainly no expert, but why would they have that if it would disqualify the lead contestant?
This story is so awesome! That would be the best race ever!
It looks like the 2nd place woman was less than 2 minutes behind her, with a finish time of 3:14:17. That's so fast! It would suck to be that second place finisher!

A pacer may prevent you from winning.
She didn't have a pacer. As the first female, she had a course Marshall on a bike showing her where to go.
I read through too quickly the first go round and got the impression she had someone on a bike pacing her which is different.

That is really close. To run that fast for over three hours, and have "my" victory scooped by this woman? If I were the 2nd placer, I'd be annoyed. I'd probably complain to the race directors or whomever was in charge. Heck, I lost out on 1st AG once at the last second in a dinky small-town short distance race, and I was still peeved for quite awhile. Sometimes there's a decent registration $ difference between halves and fulls, and the very pettiest part of me would want her to pay the difference for the more expensive race. Thankfully this will never happen to me IRL and I can let go of my hypothetical anger.

I thought the same thing! Also, the 2nd place person was racing with the (incorrect) knowledge that no one was in front of her. She may have done something different had she known!
How would she have thought she was the first place runner? I mean, I guess if she was paying close enough attention to everyone 's bibs, she would have maybe thought that up until the half way split. Presumably, she would have seen it at some turnaround. The winner saw people pass to realize she was the first female, the 2nd place runner probably realized it at some point.
Idk. Yeah, it would definitely suck, but 2nd place got beat fair & square. Maybe 1st place wasn't supposed to run the full, but she was the better runner that day. Any bitching to race staff would seem extremely petty. I mean, what would you even say?? That's not fair, I was supposed to be the fastest runner?? Whelp....you weren't. Lol
ETA: The turnoff for the half was probably around , what? Mile 7? Unless it was a weird double loop or something. Either way, they were running together for quite some time.

But it's not like she cheated. The fastest runner won.
I would be very happy with a 2nd place if I ran a 3:14. Not that its not fast, but in a lot of races, it wouldnt even get you 2nd place in your age group. And 2nd place still feels really good.
People drop down from the full to the half all the time so I dont see this as any different. Price tags are irrelevant because heck, some people dont pay anything if they have the right connections. But if they win, it's still a win.
