Fake Jew! Sorry, that's all I can think about with this.
The only jew for Jesus I've known actually was originally Jewish. Strongly identified as such. But she eventually believed in Jesus. I have no idea the whys of that transition.
Messianic Jews. Um. Yeah. They're the fake Jews. It's big in fundie world. The duggars have an Israeli flag in their home, have menorahs, I think I even saw a start of David necklace. Some even start to follow kosher, although not of the strict kind. Basically, they just avoid pork.
I am confused about the pledge and why you'd have to inform a sub. No child is required to stand or say it. They don't need a religious excuse even.
Also, I'm thinking these people are making up their traditions (in true messianic fashion) and counting on you not knowing anything about "Jew religion." You really didn't know the time frame for yom Kippur?

OK I have an update. They are not actually Messianic. I was able to talk to the mom today. She said it is often confused with Messianic (because of similar restrictions), but is not. This is not a christian-based religion. She said they do not have a "label" except that they are Jews. When I told her I was looking it up to reference, she said to look up "Ancient Hebrew Israelites." She also said that they are in the Hebrew Israelite faith nation, but sort of said it was not a title.
I did get a bunch more information, such as there are dietary restrictions, and a lot of good conversation about what would you have me do in the case if x?
I'm sorry if I offended anyone by saying Jew. The mom said they are Jews and it is a religion. But that they are not Jewish. I was looking for another religion where the people are called Jews. Normally I do not call people of the Jewish faith "Jew Religion People." I thought if I put Jew and Religion in the heading, someone who might have ideas would pop in. I didn't have a lot to go on.
Despite the restrictions, they seem pretty easy to work with. I think the lack of communication stems from their recent move and possibly being overwhelmed right now, rather than not wanting to communicate.
Could it mean they are culturally a Jew but not practicing?
I am culturally/"ethnically"/was born a Jew, and not practicing but I most certainly call myself Jewish. I can't imagine any Jews I know not call themselves Jewish even if they are atheist. (I'm agnostic fwiw)
Sounds like one of the cults to me as opposed to real Jews. Eta: just saw your update.
I would love to meet these people, seriously. What I gather from Wiki is that they consider themselves true descendants of the ancient Israelite people and keep some traditions (but it varies greatly by community) and that they wouldn't consider themselves Jewish because mainstream Jewish communities don't consider them Jewish. "Hebrew" or "Israelite" are actually very descriptive, as that's what the ancient Jewish tribes were called in the Bible.
I'll hook you up with my crazy cousin. If he hasn't "converted" back to Rastafarian by now.

She said people who call themselves Jewish are more culturally Jewish, not necessarily religious and that is why she doesn't call herself Jewish. So, I think same line of thinking as you, but the opposite position.

Interesting. I too had never heard of this particular group.
