H's training (it's local even!) will be canceled if they haven't reached a solution by Friday.
Does anyone know if the FRGs are still working? I'd like a definitive list on what locally is and isn't operational. Also, if this goes on more than a few days, I'd like to see if there's something we can do, like a food bank, for furloughed employees. Many who work here are paycheck to paycheck, and rent is crazy high. Local resources are generally tapped out at the best of times.
Our FRG appears to still be working, but H's unit is also deployed right now so I don't know if that makes a difference.
I think our Family Assistance Center employees have been furloughed.

You might check for your base MWR on FB. Ours put up a list of what was and wasn't closed here. It says FRG has either been closed or is operating on reduced hours, along with Survivor Outreach Services, a DV Luncheon, and various libraries and sports.

Good idea. We have 5 large bases/posts/camps on the island (and a handful of smaller ones), so it gets confusing as to who provides what. For instance, my H and I are assigned to different clinics, neither of which are where he works. He's an AF guy in an Army unit on a Marine camp assigned to the Navy clinic elsewhere. How's that for fun?
I'm assuming between all the locations important stuff will be covered somehow.
I thought they stopped requiring base stickers as of July 1. Mine have been expired for a couple months, and I've been on and off base a billion times and they've not said anything.
It's location specific. Years ago they weren't required at one location where I lived. They're still very much required here.
Which branch/location? When we got here neither Navy nor Air Force said boo to our rental cars or asked for documentation. We didn't try any others, though. We have to have to some work done on our car coming up so we'll be in a rental car again so if there's anywhere I need to be careful I'd like to know.

I was just thinking of that this morning. I know of a couple Facebook groups where maybe I can bring it up. DH and I aren't stretched tight so it's more of an inconvenience for us than anything. But I'm sure that there are many others who are not as lucky as we are.

They cancelled H's drill for this weekend. They don't know when it will be rescheduled.

Navy FRGs and Ombudspeople are entirely volunteer so if anybody is wondering about them, they shouldn't be closed or stop running. If anything they do is reliant on government resources, such as use of meeting spaces, then that could affect their functioning.

I've showed ID at JBPHH, Schofield, Smith, K-bay, and Tripler. I have stickers on both cars, so I don't know if they stopped requiring them. Within the last year I had to get different stickers when I bought a new-to-me car from another military couple. I got bitched at for waiting a month to do it because they were enlisted stickers. I never even paid attention to notice they're different colors. The last time I lived in a place that did that was something like 7 years ago.
I did talk to AFRC over at Hickam. They don't yet have a list of services affected. However, they're being told that Hawaii News Now is the place to check.
It varies widely by location. Pass&ID was closed at Hickam, but it's open at K-bay. Sigh. What a cluster.
The family readiness officers for the Marine Corps are a paid position, and have been suspended. I have no idea about other branches though.
I think it's paid for Army. There's really no AF analogous position. CC's spouse runs some stuff, and during deployment there may be a Key Spouse depending on the unit. I've actually never come across one of those, though.
We live in BFE. There's one grocery store other than the commissary here. The others are a 30 minute drive. Said grocery store has promptly raised their prices like a bunch of jerks.

Army has FRSA's, which are paid civilians, but are moving to FRL (family readiness liasons) which are service members tasked out to that position.

Well that sucks. Nothing like kicking people when they're down.
sushi - isn't YH AF? I thought the AF did away with stickers years ago. I've never had stickers at any of the 4 bases we've been at.
Yes, he's AF. They still have stickers here. It may be because there are so many military, so many branches, so many retirees on the island. Or maybe it's b/c we're technically OCONUS. They do 100% ID checks at all the commissaries which I've also never experienced elsewhere.
As of 4 years ago they didn't require them at Buckley.
My other AF experiences have been overseas, so, yes, they require them there plus extra security measures.
I just checked the facebook page.....Our base seems to be running as normal. The only things shutdown completely are the commissary and the little museum run by volunteers on base. There is mild effects to the CDC but they are keeping normal hours. About 600 civilian workers from the base were furloughed though.
sushi, they do ID checks at the commissary here, but I'd never experience it at other CONUS bases. At least not the handful I've been too. But this is a missile base, so a lot of the security is a bit different too. For a good chunk of the year they are 100% ID checks at the gate, which was never the case at others I've been in.

How stupid! We are lucky to several others here outside of the base, so I wasn't too worried. I didn't quite understand why everyone rushed the commissary for this reason.

That is absolutely horrible. Enough that I'd be tempted to try and get a news story out of it. Under normal circumstances I get it, capitalism/supply/demand, etc. But how is that different than gouging on bottled water right before/after a natural disaster?

What bugs me is the double ID checks. I make sure to have my ID out and ready when I come into the commissary, but then when I use the self-checkout lane to have to fumble around for it a second time is simply obnoxious because at that point I'm usually trying to get my reusable bags out, as well as stash my phone away because that's where I keep my grocery list and all that.

In a way it's a triple check. They get you going on there base, then in the store, then at check out. plus the self scanners are the worst. They never work as well as at Safeway which I didn't think I'd ever praise Safeway.

That's partly why I used to be so attached to Stop & Shop in CT. They had these scanner guns you could pick up. So, you'd pick up the scanner (they even had little holders on the carts for ) and scan each item as you put it into your cart. For me, I was able to bag everything really nicely in my reusable bags as I went along. Then I would get to the register and scan the register's code. It would take a few seconds to upload my cart. Then scan coupons, pay and leave. This system was very popular among the reusable bag crowd and the parents who brought their young children to the grocery store crowd.
So of course I get here, and yeah, I'm having withdrawals from that system.

Oh my god. The double checks make me crazy.
I ran to get my eyebrows done on my lunch one night and then ran to the commissary to get sushi (lol I know) since the base was literally right across the street from the eyebrow place. I forgot my ID in my car because I had it out for the check at the gate.
The lady would not let me buy the 6 dollar sushi because I didn't have my ID. I was piiiiiissed. SO pissed.
At least they let you in the store. Here you wouldn't have gotten past the entrance. Even if you had your h in uniform with id with you. Seriously, it's more security for the commissary here on a daily basis than when the president for through our base overseas.
Our commissary in Egypt was the same way with the ID check at the door. Plus, there were signs everywhere about not buying anything for anyone else. You can serve guests food you buy at the commissary, but they may not take any of it out of your house. Say you have a friend about to faint from low blood sugar, you technically can't give him/her the granola bar in your purse if you bought it at the commissary.
sushi the Army has FRSA (family readiness support assistant). However the actual FRG is usually run by volunteers the leader and all those positions are volunteer.

We have ID checks at the doors of the Commissary, PX, and gas station. You also have to have your ration card and they scan the ID at checkout. Talk about PITA. I believe we can "gift" someone something we buy on post, but cannot accept payment for them. They are also really strict about approving home based businesses that compete with AAFES so if someone bakes cakes, or cuts hair out of their home, they get around it by asking for donations.
Huh. Alls I know is that we have a paid position for Family Readiness Coordinator who sends out all the emails for FRG meetings (I believe she's also the leader) and other various informational stuff. It's a joint location, though, so I'm sure that mucks things up. They tend to be special in other ways, too.
I did get confirmation that she and another civilian in her office are furloughed.
Even if I wanted to, I couldn't. They're at like 9am on base. Some people work. And some people refuse to drive that far that early in the morning if they're not working that day.
Garrison just released a memo that because AFN TV is out, no live sporting events will be shown. Cue freak out. Comments are very much "Think of the soldiers!!!!111!!1!!!"
I think that was cancelled a while ago and people freaked out wasn't it?
DH is in his window for orders and can't pick any because their detailer is civilian and, of course, furloughed. Hoping this doesn't last so long that he ends up with needs of the Navy orders because we know they'd be for 29 Palms again and he's so over this place after 7 years here.

Nope. It was on until yesterday morning. There weren't going to be any military aircraft flying because of sequestration but they were going to have civilian performers. H was supposed to work it this weekend.
It must have been a different air show then. Or another time we did budget cuts lol.
