I clearly came into this story too late, because I'm not really understanding what happened based on the news stories I'm reading.
The SUV driver ran over (and paralyzed?) a motorcyclist? Then a bunch of other motorcyclists chased him down and beat him? And all of this was filmed on someone's helmet camera? Yes? No?
The stories seem to be mixed - some mention the SUV running over a motorcyclist earlier, thus "provoking" the crowd. Others maintain that no one knows what caused the group to gang up on this guy and beat him.

From what I have read, the group swarmed the SUV and one cyclist cut the SUV off and slammed on his brakes causing the SUV to bump him. The SUV pulled over because of the accident and some of the group started hitting the car and denting it with their helmets, they also apparently slashed the tires. so the guy took off in a tizzy (thus running over the one guy) He called 911 after he drove away because he apparently feared for his family's safety and eventually got stuck in traffic -- where the group caught up to him, dragged him out of his car and beat him/slashed his face. What is unclear from the posted video is what provoked the cyclists to swarm the SUV in the first place.

That's the article I read, too, and the opening line says,
"The wife of a motorcyclistwho was hit by an SUV during a melee involving 20 to 30 bikers said her husband is paralyzed from the waist down and may never walk again."
Why was her husband chasing an SUV with intent to beat someone up in the first place?!

I hope I don't offend people here, but I generally hate those types of motorcycles. Around here, those are the ones that are driven in a manner that is pretty reckless. People on regular Harley type motorcycles? Totally cool.

Were they just randomly harassing drivers, though? What made them gang up on the SUV in the first place? That's what I haven't been able to find out anywhere.
As I infer it, there was XXX interaction, then the cyclists started acting aggressively towards the SUV, at one point forcing him to a complete stop, and slashing his tires. This made him feel threatened, and he raced off, plowing down the cyclist in front of him. Chase ensued, resulting in SUV's windows being smashed and driver pulled out and beaten up. But no one seems to be saying what that precipitating event was. I'm assuming something road-ragey escalated, but that really could be anything.
If SUV did the first assholish behavior I might feel differently, but if a bunch of motorcyclists are stopping my vehicle and slashing my tires while my wife and baby are in the car you bet your ass I'm going to hightail it out of there.

From what I heard, they did randomly harass drivers

I agree, I don't fault the driver of the SUV.... especially since his wife and kid were in the car. Some of the other footage shows the car gets stuck in traffic (before the beating) and a guy gets off his bike and tries to open the door -- tow which the SUV sped off again.
It seems as though this group was looking for a fight.
I've read the thread over on CE&P about this too, and some of the ladies stories over there are pretty crazy. Some of them have been harassed and attacked by bikers just like this guy was. They haven't said what provoked the bikers, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if the answer was "nothing."
The 2011 video of them attacking a Prius driver was eye opening too. They drive around with the mentality that rules and laws don't apply to them. It's crazy and I'm not one bit surprised that a driver finally ran over one (or several) of them. Good for him.

The NYPD had over TWO HUNDRED 911 calls about this particular group of bikers. That one guy slowed down to cause an accident and when they surrounded the guy, his wife and 2 y/o, the driver panicked, hit the gas and they chased him. Then they pulled him out of the car at a light and beat the shit out of him.
When he hit the gas, he ran over a biker, who is now paralized and in a coma according to his wife and mother.
I don't feel one bit sorry for him or anyone else involved outside of the people in that SUV. Fuck all of those people on the motorcycles. It's too bad they didn't think of the consequences of harrassing other motorists before it turned violent. It is a shame that guy is probably injured for life. It's also a damn shame that they terrorized a family with a small child and beat the hell out of the father in front of them.

My DH had one of those type of motorcycles and would often take Sunday morning rides with his friends from work. They weren't reckless with them. There are assholes on every type of motor vehicle, not just those kind of motorcycles.
I think it's more that reckless-driving idiots aren't attracted to harleys as much as these built-for-speed/agility bikes. So while I'm sure there are more incidents with crotch-rockets than harleys, it hardly means that everyone on a crotch-rocket is an idiot. Same thing with fast/sports cars. You're more likely to see a sports car racing than a VW beetle, but plenty of ppl in sports cars drive reasonably.

I wonder if the guy with the helmet cam gave any thought at all to his taping this interaction having such a huge impact, quite negatively, on the actions of his group.

I knew someone would have a comment like this. I was just stating what I see around my area, i realize that not all people who own or drive that type of bike are reckless assholes. I actually went on a date, which consisted a ride on one like it, and it was fun.
