1) Is the cost dependent on whether you had a c-section? 2) when do you have to decide? 3) Is that a flat fee or per day?
At my hospital the c-sections got first dibs on the private rooms, but there was no extra charge. (They phrased it as "C-sections get a private room" but I can imagine situations where there are too many c-sections for that to be true). I was there for a week between labor, delivery and recovery. $500/day would have been pricey. $500 flat fee would have been worth it.
Apparently, I read it wrong, it would be about $500 per night.
Then no. If you are only there one night, fine. But you don't want to have to move part way through your stay and if you are there a long time that is a lot of cash to burn.
I didn't think about it before he was born because I planned on being at home.
Our hospital has both, and I would have had to pay the difference for private out of pocket because our insurance didn't cover private upgrades anymore. But they don't actually make people share rooms unless the have too. I laboured in one room, had surgery in another (OR), recovered in a third (a post-op room), then was moved to my final private room for four days.
They used to let people labour & stay in the same room, but at some point last year thought they should keep the screaming localized to one area. I remember hearing some woman screaming bloody murder while I was also in labour and thinking "man that lady can't handle her shit". Apparently I was a judgey person while labouring. oops.
This makes me appreciate my insurance so much more...I had a private room and no charge for labor. I would definitely get the private room, I kicked even my husband out the second night AND had them take the baby to the nursery
My insurance is amazing though. We will pay $100 for all prenatal and the L&D charges. They just don't pay for private rooms.
I really want to, but I don't think there is anyway I can really shell out $1500 (per the pervious poster who mentioned its $750 a night without taxes) for two nights in a hospital. And apparently DH can stay as long as the roommate consents.
I had a roommate the day of my discharge but it actually wasn't so bad. I wouldn't have paid $500 to have my own room because the nurses/doctors/room service/lactation people came in so frequently I felt like I was NEVER alone anyway. I couldn't see my roommate because of the curtain but I felt super awkward because her baby was in the NICU and mine wasn't. But not worth paying $500 for IMO.
I had a private labor room. I'd pay for that if I had to because gross.
DS was re-admitted for feeding issues and we ended up in a room with another newborn with feeding issues. It was loud and incredibly annoying. Her calming phrase to the baby was "nuk" said over and over. I'd pay for private.

Honestly, even though I recommended the private room and I'd probably get it again, it might not be worth the money. I still got NO sleep and was so aggravated and uncomfortable. I'm sure the shared room sucks but the hospital sucks no matter what.
Like others have said, if you can swing it, go private. Sharing a bathroom postpartum can be nasty business. The only clots/underwear/blood I would want to see are my own.
I would rather just keep the baby inside of me for another month than have to share a recovery room, the thought is that horrifying to me. First of all, I can't imagine sharing a room for sanitation reasons alone. Every single time I got out off hospital bed after delivery I literally had blood streaming down my legs most of the time. The toilet in my room was a wreckage and so was the tile floor. The thought of sharing a bathroom with another postpartum woman scares the bejesus out of me. I also sat on the toilet and cried for 20 mins when I had my first PP BM and that's something I'd really rather not have anyone else witness.
Well this doesn't help with my anxiety about the whole thing at all!
I delivered my first at St Lukes/Roosevelt in NYC and had a shared room. She left about an hour after I was put in the room and then I never got another roommate. No way was I going to pay $500 a night for a private room. I was only there for two nights and could have been discharged after the first night but was given the option to stay another night.
