"I was thinking about getting off on demand, but it sounds like I should be glad that I didn't"
We did last year. We were out almost the entire ToTing time last year.
It's candy we want to give out. I don't know how much I REALLY care if the kids are good and take just a few pieces or if one kid is a jackass and takes the whole thing. I really don't want any candy sitting around my house anyhow!
We have in the past. I can't remember if it's all gone by the time we get back (we usually just go around the block) but if it is, that's okay with me. Less leftovers for me to eat! And, when we're done TOTing, it's usually because the kids are tired and it's near their bedtimes. Then I can just turn off the lights and call it a night.
I'm going to for the first time this year. I feel like I committed a TOT no no last year because we took our kids TOTing and didn't give any out. This year we will take them and leave a bowl out.
I've always wondered what happens if you just leave an empty bowl? Kids think its already been taken by earlier ToTers and you don't have to buy candy. DH is convinced that would get the house egged.
We do this while we're out trick-or-treating. We go out early enough where it's mostly younger kids with their parents who monitor how much candy they take. Even if one kid does take all the candy, I don't really care.

I'm debating on what we should do this year now that we are actually going TOT. I think we'll do the first few houses together and then I'll finish one side of the block with W and switch with H so it'll really only be a few minutes that one of us isn't home.
We leave a bucket out so the TOTers don't rile up the dogs. I check on the bucket every hour or so and refill as needed until we are out.
Although it just dawned on me that we don't have a porch light this year because the H hasn't put the new ones up. I don't know if they will see the candy bucket once it gets dark.

We left a bowl out a year or two ago while we went out to dinner. The whole thing was gone by the time we got back - and we hardly get any ToTers. Which means some punk kid(s) took it all.
So no, I won't leave a bowl out again.
I hate having to answer the door though, so I might just be a scrooge and turn off all the lights and hide out. Halloween is my least favorite holiday.
I did last year, with a sign saying "Don't be greedy!" I feel crotchety just typing that, but apparently it worked. There was a respectable amount of candy still left when we got back from TOT.

We leave a bowl out every year. DH and I don't have kids and, unfortunately, our friends with kids have moved from the neighborhood. It's not as fun to stay in and give out candy as it was when our friends brought their kids by. So now we go out to dinner and have a few drinks, and leave a bowl of candy on the porch. It's usually gone by the time we get back ... but the last thing I need is a big bowl of candy sitting around in my house. So I don't mind.

No.
If we both go out with the kid, then we stick a note on the door directing kids to our neighbor's house. They give out our candy and theirs til one of us gets back. No way am I leaving 20lbs of candy unattended.
