Reasonably, how long do you expect carpet to last before it needs to be replaced?
We just replaced our living room carpet which was terrible. Now with the new stuff in, the upstairs is looking dingy. It looked really good compared to the old stuff, LOL.
Our house is 10 years old, the carpet is a beige berber. I am thinking we will need to replace within the next five years.
Cheap carpet, with cheap carpet padding could wear down an unacceptable amount _very_ quickly, particularly in high traffic areas. High quality carpet, with good carpet padding, can stand up for years, even in high traffic.

Carpet should last you more than 5 years!! Well, unless you have messy pets or let children eat/color/etc on it. But in general? You should be able to get at least 10 years out of (decent) carpet that is well cared for.

Oh, I meant we would need to replace the upstairs carpet within 5 years (likely 2-3). It's already 10 years old. All the carpet is 10 years old as they were put in when the house was built. The living room carpet was much much worse so we replaced it last week. We didn't build the house so I have no idea how good the carpet is that was here when we moved in.
I expected carpet to last more like 15-20 years. The new stuff we bought has a 20 year warranty.
Our neighbors were renting out their house and the carpets are only ten years old (same age as the house). The renters had three little kids (#4 was born when they were living there) all under 6, they had guinea pigs and other animals, and when they left, the carpet literally looked like it would be better to remove and replace than even bother cleaning it. I think they decided to give it a try and clean it anyway, but I'd be surprised if they got it decent looking.
Our carpet, on the other hand, is the same age and looks good. We run the Roomba nearly every day, and steam-clean with our Bissell when it needs it, and even with three cats, it's in good shape. No kids. I don't see us needing to replace it any time soon.
It's all about the kind of care you give it, and what it's exposed to, I think.
There is original builder grade carpet in our 1998 townhome. It's not the prettiest looking (stains, not breaking down), but it's held up to our two dogs for the last 5+ years. I think we could get another year or two out of it.
