Out of all the things to hate about the second movie, that is what I hated most. Or maybe it was the "Lawrence of my labia" line. It's a toss-up, I guess.
I saw SATC2 right when it came out. Throughout this whole thread, I've been trying to remember the horrible storyline. I honestly can't, even with these posts. I think I effectively banished it from my mind.
It was so unapologeticly a cash cow. There was no story to tell. It was solely for the purpose of raking in dolla dolla billz.
I wrote a paper about this in college. I think the glorification of the characters being role models or likable is really misplaced and not the actual intent of the show. There's nothing admirable about Carrie, and I don't think she was intended to grow as a person. In real life, not everyone does. She really is representative of the time period though... a lot of flash and not a lot of depth.
That said, I don't mind the show. I only mind women thinking that Carrie is like, amazeballs totes awesome.
I liked the show; I never watched it in real time but I did get the DVDs a few years ago and ripped through those. I will say I've never analyzed it so much until right now though.
I unabashedly love this show (even as a 40-something, lol), while still loathing most of the decisions Carrie makes.
It always bothered me how she treated Miranda after Brady was born. Remember the ep where she just stopped by and Miranda was frustrated and trying to get Brady to latch on, and as soon as she did, and could relax and talk, Carrie was all, "OK, BYE! You're a mother!"
Or when Miranda was exhausted with a newborn and falling asleep on the phone and Carrie was just "blah blah blah me me me book review"?
Bitch.
I think this points out what was great about the show, the characters were deeply flawed, made terrible choices, were not always the best friend they could be, etc. I think it was honest in that regard. Who has not been there when they are the first to have kids and your friend(s) treat you like you have the plague?
I still love the rabbit sex episode or also known as Charlotte and Harry's wedding episode and the episode where Kristen Johnston played the has been party girl and falls out the window. "I am so over this. O-V-E-R over. I'm so bored I could die." cue fall.
The consumerism in the first movie was kind of gross too. You can tell it was made pre recession.
It was also kind of ick when Charolotte and Miranda had their "bonding" moment in the second movie when they're complaining about how hard their kids are and how they don't understand how women without nannies do it. It just runs a really crass, elitist note to me.
One more thing: one of my strangest moments in life was when my very conservative Catholic aunt told me that she LOVED this show and binge-watched it On Demand. It made me feel a little closer to her and her hidden nastiness, lol.
Sex and the City: bringing family together.
So your aunt didn't go all Magda on you, replacing your vibrator with rosary beads?
When it was on originally, I watched it and like it, and seeing reruns now I always wonder how I ever got through an episode of the show. It is truly terrible.
Yes! Even by the time the first movie came out, I was like holy shit, they are insufferable to me now (although I still watched the second one, lol).
And this is how I feel about the current show Girls. When I was in my early 20s, and could relate to "I'm a mess! hee hee" characters, I liked shows like this. If I were in my early 20s now, I would probably love Girls. But I no longer find shows about being a mess and not doing anything about it the slightest bit entertaining. Once you can no longer relate to that situation, the entertainment value is zero.
oh I used to love SATC! now when I see a rerun I am like WTF was I thinking. I hate Carrie she is possibly one of the most horrible characters ever to exist. She didn't deserve the love of Aiden, nor of Big. She sucks
I have a love/hate relationship with SATC. I enjoyed watching the show, but found the characters annoying. I also think the point of view of the show was supportive of the characters, rather than realizing they are mostly jerks. I remember there was an episode in season 2 when Samantha feels slut shamed by her older neighbors, but then one of the older neighbors is brutally assaulted by a building intruder and Samantha has no empathy and keeps whining about herself, which Carrie enforces. That irritated the heck out of me. When I listen to the commentary on Girls, it is clear that the writers know the characters are jerks and it is a satire of those type of people. The commentary on SATC is all about how wonderful they are and empowering to women which is total BS.
This made me think of the episode where Aidan was trying to convince her to go camping - not traditionally, just a weekend in a cabin in the woods, and she was being such a flipping drama queen about the the bugs and all I AM A CITY GIRL AIDAN!!!
Ewww. She was super-high maintenance.

Yes. I think it was supposed to be like, "Yay to hard-working moms!" but it really came off as elitist and snobby.
They are all messes in that second movie, but the moment that drove me the most crazy was the scene where Charlotte was making cupcakes or whatever, with both her kids there while also talking to Carrie on the phone and WEARING A CREAM-COLORED VINTAGE SKIRT. I know I am about as far from fashion-minded as it gets, but I don't care whether it's from Target or Versace: WHY are you baking in white?? MUCH LESS with small children around.
LOL clearly I am overly invested in that scene. But it just made it clear to me how out of touch the writers had become. Or maybe that's just how they roll in NYC.

Yep. I know I'm old because I can no longer watch "Reality Bites" (which used to be my faaaaavorite movie - OMG they're so deep! etc) without wanting to scream at the characters to stop bitching and just get a job already.
IT ISN'T. My sister could be Charlotte and she would not cook in white or vintage anything. lol The kind of people who trot around in that stuff everyday leave the cupcake making with kids to the little people.
I haven't watched this show in a long time, but I loved it when I was in my early 20's. I couldn't relate to a lot of the details (living in NYC, fashion, ridiculous jobs) but I could relate to a lot of the emotions of dating and the friendships. I don't know that I'd want Carrie to be my best friend, but I never disliked her because I thought she was relateable in a lot of ways. She wasn't a model of who I wanted to be, but rather a flawed person just trying to navigate relationships and being an adult in the world.
I should probably watch it again now and see what I think after growing up and getting divorced. I wonder if I'd find it more or less relateable.
How did I almost miss a discussion of my all time favorite show? I love this show but of course since watching it for the past 15 years, I can nit pick every scene and how stupid they could be. Carrie is the worst friend ever.
It's actually fun to watch Carrie when someone else is talking about their problems. I don't know if the writers were deliberate or if SJP did it on her own, but you could see Carrie's bored expression when someone else is talking and her anxiousness to make a joke, then bring the conversation back to her.
She was the worst in the Nina Katz face episode.
I hated that they had Aiden in the 2nd movie married with 3 kids and still pining for Carrie. His line about how she's not like other girls, "Boy are you not" or some shit like that.
Big deserved a kick in the balls rather than a bouquet over his head. The guy was ready to leave her at the alter. Please. Carrie hater or not, any girl would be devastated over that.
I really hope there is a 3rd movie to redeem us from Abu Dabi. Please.
I've read about 3/4 of this thread, and I'm with toledo...I love/d this show. This post made me pull out my DVD collection to watch while DD naps.
My one question... Miranda named her baby Brady Hobbes. So when Miranda and Steve got married, even if Miranda didn't change her name, did the kid become Brady Brady? This has always bugged me.

With a refrigerator, stove, and hot water. And a bed.
She screamed when she saw a SQUIRREL.
And note: if she's ever been to a park in the city, there are squirrels there.
We also have rats, mice, cockroaches, and pigeons all over the place so if she's ever left her apartment* she's seen much less cuddly vermin than squirrels.
*assuming that her apartment doesn't have these things, which... maybe isn't a fair assumption in a walk-up building.

I saw a mouse a few weeks ago on my walk back to the subway from work.
I thought, "I'm having the AUTHENTIC NEW YORK EXPERIENCE!!!!"
