I decided I wanted to be a lawyer when I was 18. I hoped to work for the federal government initially, but I work at a big firm instead. I count myself lucky to still be working in the field in general, and in my practice area of preference specifically.

No, no, and no.
In high school and through most of college, I wanted to go into radio news. I have a BS in Radio/TV Broadcasting as a result. It took me until my senior year to realize I hated it, and then I was stuck just finishing b/c I couldn't afford to change majors. So I thought I'd do grad school for business and then go into public relations. That was foiled too b/c of my undergrad school. So, I just took whatever jobs came along, but I'm pretty much stuck in advanced clerical hell unless I decide to go back to school at some point.
In high school I wanted to be a social worker. My sophomore year of college I changed to early childhood ed (basically). For a long time (when I was 16-26 years old) I worked in child care while volunteering in my mom's kinder class on and off. I freaking loved working with those kinders. So I combined the best of both worlds 4 years after graduating from college by working with preschoolers in a public school district. I'll never make a lot of money, but I love my job.
I wanted to become a doctor. But I didn't want to do a full degree first (here some people get in without undergrad). I started in microbiology, switched to dentistry, and then accounting, lol. Then after practicing accounting a few years I went back to grad school and am now a university professor.
