Is there an age where this would be considered normal? 18 hours seems crazy long to me. I would for sure push her to have him checked out by a doctor. I don't have kids, but I'm fairly certain I would be concerned if I had one who was sleeping for 18 hours a day.
eta: I mean in a row, not broken up into naps and night sleep.

Newborn?
Even still. If my newborn slept for 18 hours in a row, without waking up to eat, I would be concerned.

Well, David was always a heavy sleeper. I timed him when he came home from the hospital and he slept 22 hours a day, lol. He's always been a very heavy sleeper. Always. It may not be common but some kids do sleep a lllllot.
I think at a year he slept at about 18 hours, maybe a little less, but not consecutively, now way. He's now 5, healthy and only sleeps 10 hours a day.

I guess I should have said that sleeping 18 hours in a row, consistently, isn't normal at ANY age. My DD was a late-term preemie and slept about 22 hours/day. She would barely wake up to eat (we had to rouse her) and would actually fall back to sleep while nursing. It SEEMED like she was never actually awake, but she was.
yeah, that is not normal. I would definitely want to call the Pedi if it was my kid. The kid needs to eat, drink and have a diaper change in that period.
12 hours in a row = totally normal. Heck, even 14 hours would be ok, but 18 and I'd be worried something is up.
Plus he is in a diaper for 18 hours. That ain't good.
Like Jerms-My kids have always been fantastic sleepers and 13 hours was the longest stretch they ever ever ever slept. 11-12 is more normal for the baby/toddler age.
There is a mom on my local mommies board whose daughter sleeps 20-21 hrs a day. She has been to the dr. a few times, but she is anti vax and thinks drs are going to make her do something invasive that she doesn't want to do. So her is just constantly sleeping.
