I have all the books I could need, and what more could I need than books? I shall only engage in commerce if books are the coin. -- Catherynne M. Valente
if she reciprocates, she's going to look like a grudge-holding nutter who has been hanging on to that FOR A WHOLE YEAR
Or as someone who can wait an entire year to deliver the punch of her joke! I really thinkg it is hilarious.
I think I'm going to get them a similar but less flame-ful book. I agree that the God Delusion is pretty harsh, whereas the tone of the book they got me was much less "in your face" - if that makes sense? I mean, it was still a dick move but the book itself certainly wasn't "offensive". For anyone who is interested, its "Proof of Heaven" and is written by a former atheist who had a near-death experience and now believes in God. It is an interesting read regardless of your religious affiliation or lack thereof.
I'm going to go with the one about living 'biblically" for a year because its apparently pretty funny.

Many (not ALL) Christians and others who hold strongly to their religious views don't like to hear opposing views, and can see a difference of opinion as an attack. Athiests are living in a world surrounded by religion, are used to hearing differences of opinions, and have experience reinforcing their own beliefs through debate.
That said, I'll always choose to keep the peace with ILs even when they don't take the high road. It's not worth it to me.

It is funny, although it annoyed me, and I love AJ Jacobs. It felt very "Well, after faking it for a year, I think all of a sudden I will truly incorporate religion in my life because it is such a wonderful thing".

I think this is a good move. It's more tit for tat and lighthearted. Instead of tit for punch in the face, lol.
This. and the A in Atheists was n the subject line for me so I didn't know what theists were. I thought it was another hip show I don't watch about zombies or vampires or dead people that are half naked.

Maybe I should read The God Delusion. lol
I didn't like it much either. It felt a little condescending.
Do you think it was condescending because you are a believer or is that his style of writing? like, I think almost everyone would agree that Richard Dawkins is condescending (I would say that, and I love him). But from what I've heard about AJ Jacobs is that he's funny and NOT condescending. Does that make sense?
I think it would be funny. Then again I'm not familiar with either book so I dont know if one is lighthearted and the other is an assholish book, but if they're both similar in attitude then I dont see a problem with it.
DH and I are agnostic and his family is Southern Baptist. We get it from them all the time but they know to expect it back from us. No one would side eye this in his family.
I think it has to do more with family dynamic than religious vs nonreligious.
i may just have more aggressive atheist friends, but i think zealous atheists can be just as obnoxious as zealous christians. i'm sick to death of hearing about my "imaginary friend in the sky" or how religion is for people who need to feel better about death or whatever. i have a very good friend who likes the term "the magical jew." it's not just Xns.
time to live and let live and kumbaya and all that.
Perhaps because I am not religious, but I don't know anyone pushing their personal beliefs or non beliefs on others. Except my mother. And the Jehovah witnesses and mormons that knock on my door on sunday mornings. I have definitely never heard it from atheists.

I think there are fewer atheists so fewer zealous ones. I haven't met any either but I imagine that group who puts up the billboards (about Christmas being a lie etc.) Is probably full of really annoying people.

I know one, my sister, but she is like that about everything. It's just one more area in which anyone who disagrees with her is obviously wrong and probably a bad person. lol.
I find agnostics the most tolerable, although even they can get preachy. Like that bumper sticker that says "I don't know, and you don't either." I mean, I kind of agree, but it still makes me roll my eyes.
In our defence, we are massively outnumbered like for every 1 atheist or agnostic bumper sticker there will be 50 Jesus fish ones.
You probably wouldn't notice though as a believer, kwim?
