I don't think he will enjoy it. I went last week and took my kids, boys 2 (turning 3 next month) and 6 and a 12 year old girl. The 12 year old was the only one that loved it. The 6 year old paid attention and liked the bears in the movie but didn't rave about it. The 2 year old just didn't get it at all and just wanted snacks and sleep.
Have you guys seen Madagascar 3? The boys LOVED that!

My son is 3 and a half, and I decided not to take him after seeing it myself. I think it's the kind of thing maybe he would be okay with on video, but not in the dark theatre. On the other hand, my friends took their 5 and 3 year-olds and they did fine. There is mostly one scary part with a bear. That said, I was surprised that the previews seemed VERY inappropriately scary, especially the one for ParaNorman (?) -- the animated one with zombies. Like, seriously, zombies dropping eyeballs, dead hands coming out of the ground, decomposing faces, etc. I was really surprised they thought that was okay for "Brave."

It was scary for both of my kids - a couple of scenes with bears being fighting and getting attacked. DS was actually more scared because he understood more and was worried about Merida's mom and scared of the witch. It was DD's first movie (she's 2.75), and she got a little antsy, even though I didn't think it was too long.
The short beforehand was cute. And I loved the movie.
My three year old neice loved it and was totally sucked into it for the whole thing. I thought a couple of the bear scenes might scare her but she was totally fine. I really think it depends on the kid to be honest. My niece loved it and was able to sit through the whole thing but another kid her age may not. A good test for us was that she sat through the Disney on Ice this past Spring which was longer then the movie (though there was a short intermission).
