Have you had a look at childcare costs yet? I stopped working because it was not worth the little bit of money I had left after childcare (but I never had a career, I had a job). Now my salary is not that much more than the stat maternity rate, and with the child benefit money it kind of evens out. But, I only work 2 nights a week from home. And DH is the main earner.
I haven't really looked into it too much, but from what I can tell it's quite expensive. I am the main earner though, so if he doesn't get a job H will be a stay at home dad until he finds one, which in academia can take awhile. If he does have a job, I'll still go back to work since I love what I do and I suspect I will always bring in the larger income.
5 years ago I was paying £900 a month, and that was in Dorset. DH's cousin lived in on the Surrey/Hampshire border, Farnborough I think. He was paying around £1350 around 3 years ago. Just to give you an idea. Hopefully your DH finds a job. If he decided to stay home then he should hook up with TofuMonkey's (IL Board) DH. They are Canadian and he is a stay at home dad to their twins. They also live in London.
13 weeks. I have to use accrued sick time and vacation time to cover it, but like FastHands have been saving for a while due to infertility. So I'll also have about 9 weeks paid. Plus probably about 1 week's pay worth of disability payment. So in the end about 3 weeks unpaid. I will spend my leave balances down to zero, but I'll earn 2 sick days and 4 vacation days while I'm out that I'll come back to to start me off for afterwards. My wife is going to take ~8 weeks after I go back to work, and then we'll face the daycare issue.
If I end up on bedrest this plan gets a whole lot more complicated - I will probably be begging for them to hold my job with additional unpaid leave, which will suck a lot.
Part-time from 6-23 weeks; full-time at 23 weeks. (Part-time is my non-teaching duties as they will hire someone to cover my classes for the entire semester.)
I get 39 weeks paid maternity so that is what I will be taking. I could take a full year, but I need an income so I am only taking the paid portion. I might extend with my 6 weeks of annual leave or keep that for later in the year. I am undecided.
I get 6 or 8 weeks paid (depending on delivery method) and I'll have a week or two of PTO to use in addition to that. I plan to take at least 12 weeks off, so 2-4 weeks will be unpaid.
vigurl, blushing, does the loophole extend to me? I am both Canadian and living in the UK.
I haven't really decided yet. I know I get a certain number of weeks at almost 100% pay, but then it drops to crappy UK statutory maternity pay which is practically nothing, though hopefully H will be finished his PhD and have a job by then. I'm saving up a bunch of my holidays to add on to it, too, so I will probably take between 4-6 months.

Yes. LO#2 will be going to the same DC as DS. I know exactly what the cost is. We only have to pay for 1 yr b/c DS will go to public pre K next yr.

**faints**
SO JELS.
See why I don't let the foreigners participate (and I saw foreigners with the nicest intentions as I am a forigner but I just live in America )
I have 12 weeks FMLA, 6 weeks paid @55% through disability and 6 weeks paid @55% through baby bonding. My work will usually allow another 6-8 weeks unpaid. Luckily (?) like the others, infertility has gifted me with a shit ton of time off saved, so I should have 18-20 weeks fully paid.
I will be taking 12 weeks of FMLA like last time. I get 5 weeks of 60% pay from STD. I will probably have at least one week of PTO accrued and will use that so I am paid for half the leave.
6 or 8 weeks paid depending on how I deliver, plus another 2-4 unpaid. I work in a school, so my plan is to return for the last ten days of work to wrap up the year and then roll right into 10 more weeks of summer vacation. Would have loved to take the rest of the year off (I will if I wind up with a C), but my word is it hard on the wallet. Couldn't believe it when I saw the figures HR emailed me!

I have no idea. I took 2 weeks fully off- my office is home right now so I'm working here and there doing the things that have to get done ASAP.
I'm not sure when I'll go back full time. The dr I work for has told me numerous times I don't need to go back yet and I can take another 1 or 2 months... Before I go back full time.

I have 8 weeks paid "sick" time, plus 3 weeks of paid vacation. On top of that, I think I can do 12 weeks at half pay, but we haven't quite decided yet to take that. (That would be a considerable hit pay wise.) I am also trying to figure out if they will let me work from home some, which would be ideal, honestly.
