I heard another story that I can't find of a foreign contractor arriving and leaving almost immeadiately when he realized it had almost no chance of being completed in time and didn't want his name associated plus he wasn't going to be paid if he did stay. Which probably explains why a lot of things aren't done now. He can't be the only one.
I watched a documentary about Shaun White's road to Sochi and he's been fighting small injuries a lot. He even skipped the X GAmes in an effort to get ready. He seemed really down to earth and cool, and I don't think he pulled out because he thinks he won't win. I think he's still plagued by injury and after seeing multiple competitors get injured, requiring adjustments to the course, he pulled out to avoid a career-ending injury.
Just read an article that Shaun White has dropped out of the Slopestyle, citing that the course was too dangerous.
Other competitors are saying it's because he knows he won't win.
I think another snowboarder just broke his collar bone there yesterday. That's what I've heard at least.
And another was carted away with a concussion. Apparently, they over (under?) built the pipes and stuff because they thought the snow would melt. And it didn't. So they're all the wrong heights or something.
Are these journalists just being dramatic? Or is shit really that bad?
I hope the poster who is there comes back!-reading fail. tizzy I can't wait for your updates!
I know a few others on this board have been to Russia? There are hotels that are beautiful, but usually in the more cosmopolitan cities. The government just doesn't provide the appropriate infrastructure or regulation.
I was only in Sochi for 2 days in 99', but, well, it was basically the same. We were students, and we sprung for the 2nd most expensive hotel there. It was a mess, a professor found a hole on the side of her mattress where rats had nested. The workers in the lobby shrugged, and eventually switched out the mattress before midnight. There was no way they would give her a different room, not that it would have been much better.
