I'm Latina and I know many Beatles songs but that's only because I had friends who were into the Beatles and introduced me to their music and movies when I was in jr. high. I imagine my parents were aware of the Beatles but wouldn't know their music as they only listened to Spanish language radio. Which makes me wonder if the Beatles ever had their music translated into Spanish.
I Want to Hold Your Hand Eight Days a Week All You Need is Love Hey Jude Let It Be Love Me Do With a Little Help From My Friends Back in the USSR Get Back Yellow Submarine From Me to You Yesterday In My Life Come Together Nowhere Man Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band Don't Let Me Down All My Loving Drive My Car I Feel Fine She Loves You You've Got to Hide Your Love Away Penny Lane Blackbird Please Please Me Help! A Hard Day's Night
There are people who don't know ANY of these songs? I admit I find that shocking.
But the question was, can you name a Beatles song?
Which I took to mean, literally, can you come up in your mind without hearing the song name a song title of The Beatles. Which no, I really don't think I could do.
However, if the question was, could you recognize a Beatles song on the radio? Then, I would've said yes.

I wasn't into the Beatles at all until I met my DH, who is a huge fan. In fact, I remember telling him they were overrated. Once I actually started listening to them, I became a huge fan. I seriously can't imagine anyone not liking them! If you don't like their later stuff, listen to their earlier! It's like 2 different bands.
I stopped counting once I got to 20 songs off the top of my head.

I'm still surprised people can't name one Beatles song. We're talking about the best-selling recording artist of all time.
FWIW, I would be surprised if someone couldn't name a Michael Jackson song, either. I mean, I grew up totally oblvious to most pop culture. I was playing Bible games while my friends were watching MTV. But I could have named Beat It, Thriller, and Black or White, even if I didn't know much MJ. My friends gave me hell in high school about never having seen the video for Thriller, but I could have named the song. MJ was a major pop culture phenomena, much like The Beatles.
We're talking about major parts of music history here. At the least, I'd assume someone who literally could not name a single Beatles song is not a big fan of music. I mean, I can name "Fuck the Police," and I'm the whitest person alive.

Yeah, I agree about being surprised that Americans of all races couldn't name at least one Beatles song. But I'm also not at all surprised that the Beatles are more familiar to and more popular among white people. I'm white and similarly pop culture inept and if asked to name Michael Jackson songs could come up with Thriller and Beat It. But my mind was totally blown when MJ died while I was working in Harlem - before that I literally had no idea how popular he was among black people.

I agree. I really would have assumed that most adults would be able to come up with at least one song for each of the top four or five recording artists of all time--The Beatles, Elvis, Michael Jackson, Madonna, etc. I would have thought that would transcend race given the level if commercial success those artists enjoyed and the extent to which their music pervades pop culture. I have never purchased an Elvis record/tape/CD (or stole my parents', as I did with The Beatles) or shown any particular interest in him, but I can still come up with a handful of song titles.

I would be really surprised too -- I figured MJ was solidly in white people territory.

DH and I were in an elevator the other day and a Madonna song came on. He was surprised that I could sing along (it was one of her "Material Girl" era songs, not a more recent one). He then said he wouldn't know the difference between a Madonna song and any other female recording artist out these days.
I was very surprised by that. He was on the bar/bat mitzvah circuit in the 80s. It's hard to believe that Madonna wouldn't have been playing at all of those parties, but I guess he just didn't gaf.

Wait...is this sarcasm or are you guys serious?
I was referring to MJ as being more fanatically popular among black people. I'm not sure where v was coming from - kind of the opposite of what I was thinking.
"I've always followed my father's advice: he told me, first to always keep my word and, second, to never insult anybody unintentionally. If I insult you, you can be goddamn sure I intend to. And, third, he told me not to go around looking for trouble." -John Wayne
I think the difference between the Beatles and Michael Jackson is that MJ was actively making music during most of GBNCer's lifetimes. The Beatles weren't, so it would take more to get keyed into them. There was no Beatles music on the radio stations I listened to growing up and my parents weren't playing it. I wouldn't be surprised if it was playing in the background of movies and shows I watched but there was nothing there to say this is a Beatles song. When LA posted her list, I was like "oh, those are Beatles songs." But I couldn't have come up with that off of the top of my head and named them, as OP asked, because I did not know they were Beatles songs.
And I'm a black girl from Kansas, I can only imagine what a black girl from Detroit would know. (I'm saying this in jest in case it's not clear)

I couldn't have named a Michael Jackson song before he died. I knew his name, and I knew and liked his music. But I didn't know they went together until he died.

Yes it's the 50th anniversary of being on Ed Sullivan. Kind of a big deal from what I gather. I honestly hate Beatles music, and even I can name many of their songs, I just don't like them. This is where my mom feels she has failed me. She listens to Beatles Brunch ever single Sunday morning.

White. I can name 2 off the top of my head, but only because "yellow submarine" was in our grade 4 song book in elementary school, and because one of my friends introduced me to "Why Don't We Do In the Road" (aka the most hilarious and random song ever). www.youtube.com/watch?v=KM02WcvlKn0&feature=kp Looking at the list Lasagna posted I recognize a few more. I also know their voices if I hear a song on the radio. I'm not really a fan though.
My biggest takeaway from this poll is that 90% of this board's members (or the poll respondents, at least) are white. That's... an overwhelming majority.

That's not surprising though is it?
No, I suppose not. It's just kind of jarring seeing the numbers.

100% this. Good explaination!
Exactly. I knew a few from that list but definitely couldn't name them. That being said, I can't name the artists of a lot of songs (even producing music now).
I just asked my 32 year old white husband and he said "Isn't there one with 'sunshine' in it? I feel like I should be able to, but I can't." We are made for each other, lol.

OMG.
This thread is making me weep.
BEST SELLING RECORDING ARTIST OF ALL-TIME!
And I really only consider myself a casual Beatles fan, at most.

To be fair, he grew up in WV
I know a lot of the songs listed by you but wasn't able to come up with them on my own.
