Merrick is a good food. What conflicting reports are you reading?
Quincy eats Fromm's Game Bird, and Sadie eats Wellness Core Ocean. I would prefer to feed them the same food, but so far Wellness has worked the best Sadie's sensitive tummy, and Quincy doesn't seem to like it.
Our "main" biscuit is Old Mother Hubbard's mini biscuits, regular or Extra Tasty. We also usually have one other kind in rotation; they like Whole Foods' biscuits, Zuke's Mini Bakes, and generally, whatever biscuits Trader Joe's has at any given time.
Another Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream here. I'm trying to eliminate things (slowly) to see if I can pinpoint any allergies. The vet is pretty sure the issues she's had since we adopted her nearly 2 years ago are allergies - constant lip infections, goopy eyes, yeast infection in her ear, and she scratches like it's her job, poor pup. She's only been on the TOTW for a month or two. She's grain free and now chicken free.
A note about Natural Balance - they were bought by Del Monte a year or so ago. I used to feed that to my cat, but not long after they were sold, I could tell the quality of the food went downhill. He's now on TOTW, too.
That being said, I still give the dog NB treats. They're good for training, which we constantly do. (She's got protection aggression issues, so every walk is a training session.)

Taste of the Wild for food. It's the only one she has not had a bad reaction to thus far.
For treats, we buy from a local dog bakery. Rox has sensitive skin issues and some food allergies, so we have to be really picky about what we feed her.
Our dog is so picky when it comes to treats. She will not have anything rawhide, it has to be pork so we give her pork ears or those pork twists. I don't look at brand, I just try to get what's cheapest as long as it's real pork.
I have a cat BUT she eats Nature's Variety Instinct Raw (I get chicken but they have other varieties), which can be eaten by dogs or cats. It's a raw food, you have to keep it in the freezer. My cat's stomach issues did a complete 180 and she does amazingly well on this food. I've heard similar praise reports from dogs owners on this food.
Blue Buffalo Large Breed. We have been very happy with it.
I make their treats from scratch using my H's home brew grains. The dogs go nuts over them and it's a lot cheaper than buying. There are a lot of homemade dog treat recipes out there if you are interested.
