I thought I saw once upon a time that someone over here is a seamstress. I have a question for her, so hopefully y'all will indulge a non-reg posting here.
My wedding dress is a sheath style. I need a slit put in it so that I can actually dance in it (our first dance has lifts and dips and such in it). The skirt has 3 layers that are all the same length--basically an outer layer and two linings. My seamstress is telling me that she's not comfortable putting a slit in it because she's worried that the layers won't lay right when she stitches the edges of the slit together, and she's worried the inner layers will get all bunchy. Does this sound reasonable, or do I need to find someone else who can do it?
When I got my wedding dress taken in, the tailor told me he wouldn't be able to take in the skirt and keep the pockets. I was disappointed, but I wanted it to fit so I said ok. When I went to pick it up he had managed to keep them for me. He was almost as thrilled with himself as I was.
Mel will have an answer for you, I'm sure. It sounds like a reasonable thing someone should be able to fix.
The train is being hemmed off completely so that it's just a floor-length dress. I would like the slit ideally to be in back or on the side so that it's not super obvious (not trying to pull an Angelina!), but I'll take what I can get!

I think it is doable. I dont think it will look weird but I am sort of concerned about how the slit will be reinforced so it doesn't tear while you move. If I were doing it I would add another layer of fabric and stabilize it all along the slit area then I would sew it around the slit and hem and then you could flip it up and sew it close to the bodice area.
I also think the slit will have to be on the side or the front of the dress. The back of your dress has a lot more fullness than the front even calculating the train being removed so I think the front of the dress will still be too constricting if there isn't a vent in that area.
That might not make sense.. But it makes sense to me! Also, you look gorgeous in it!!

I agree with what captainmel is saying (and understand it. ) The back is too full for a slit. It won't lay right.
I'd do it if you were close to me! Look for someone who is comfortable working with (and has pics of things) garments that are charmuse because if it is done wrong it will look tortured.
