I my state the cut off date is September 1st. The state is very strict when it comes to that age. My sister forged my niece's birth certificate to indicate she was younger because she didn't want to send her to kindergarten. Don't ask me how she did it, I didn't want to know. Then she keeps complaining that the other kids are behind my niece.
Interesting side note. My step-daughters were born on September 2nd. They are gifted with an IEP so their parents could have pushed to have them advanced to a higher grade when they were identified. They decided not to. It was a good move. Even at 15 they are a little immature compared to their grade level peers. I say do what your gut tells you about your child.
spin off question...if a child was "not ready", wouldn't the place to obtain services to make them ready be school? i really have no idea. because wouldn't the EI cut off be school aged?
EI cut off is 3, the school districts take over Intermediate Units in PA.
Carson being an end of October baby will miss the cut off so he will be a 2019 starter. He will be one of the older ones in the class, but not the oldest.
Edie is the oldest. Her school boyfriend is late October and he's the 2nd oldest. He's SO SMALL. Smaller than Adeline. But Edie loooooves him.
Carson will also be really small I think. I compare him to creamsiclechica's Carter, who is wearing 6-12. Carson is wearing 0-3 pants today.

This is exactly the case for us. I'm kind of glad I don't have to send babies to school two years in a row!! It's too much growing up back to back.

Here the cut off date is December 31. We also have junior and senior kindergarten, junior is optional though (and senior might be too, I'm not sure on that). It's five days a week a full days but I know some people only send them part time. I guess there is quite a bit of flexibility there. Assuming I feel he's ready I will send him full time when he's 4.5 to jk.
My special needs son will not be redshirted. He will start kindergarten in Aug 2015.
Redshirting has affected us. There are 3 six year olds in Kalvin's preschool class. There are 15 kids graduating to kindergarten this year, there are 20 total in his class. At least 6 kids met the age cutoff to start kindergarten this year. Katelyn is stuck in the 1 year old room because there is no room to move any of the kids up until Aug. She will be 2.5 years old by the time she gets to move up to the 2 year old room. That sucks big time. What also sucks is that I save $20 a week when she moves to the 2 year old room.
Fuck redshirters.
Also, my birthday was the cutoff. I was the youngest in my class. I also graduated in the top 3% of my class. The only con for me was that I was not allowed to skip a grade because I was too young.
Yep yep yep. I actually plan to make sure his is in a play based curriculum through three and then in a more academic pre-k.
Can you give me a rundown on what play based curriculum means? The place I enrolled Ada at does play based in the 2 and 3 class and only does academic pre-k in the 4's (or the year right before kindergarten). I asked a few questions while touring it but am not sure what the different between a play based vs academic 2 and 3 year class.
Eh, there are probably more official definitions but for me "play-based" is centers and social skills. Academic means working towards reading skills and practicing more of a classroom set up.

I would never red shirt unless there was a specific problem you were addressing. NEVER for something like sports. I can't get on board with that at all. I was 4 when I started kindergarten (turned 5 a month after it started) and was always one of the highest in my class. I graduated 4th in my class so I don't buy that being the youngest means you're automatically at a disadvantage.

Henry is a late April baby and started kindergarten at 5.5. He was fine. Red shirting is not done in my town ( unless there are obvious concerns about emotional or academic readiness brought up by a preschool teacher or something - even then the parents I knew who had concerns about their kid being ready sent them to private kindergarten, so that after that year they could either proceed with public first grade or repeat kindergarten in public school).
Henry did 3 years of preschool - also typical here. It was play based. Our kindergarten here is also less "academic" than many I have heard of . They don't teach reading in our kindergartens for example. They do a whole language approach to literacy and in K focus on writing/invented spelling for literacy, which I really like .
Anyway, I wouldn't even be thinking of this now. Expect that your kid will go to kindergarten at the earliest time they can, and if you and if you /your preschool teachers identify concerns think about it then.
How would you know your child isn't socially ready for school if they haven't been in school?
Most kids are in pre-k the year before so I would base if off that. If she was really disruptive, not sitting or following directions when other kids did, I might consider her not ready socially.
I guess I think about this bc I was held back for K. I have a late Nov bday but I just wasn't ready. Funny thing is there were so many kids in my grade older or my age.
I would have failed if I went earler but instead I graduated top of my class (but was still challenged)
I think my parents did what was best for me.
This was also 30 yrs ago and the cut off might have been oct?

I will be sending Ruby in 2017. She will turn 5 in May and I am fairly sure she will be ready. My nephew turns 5 in August in 2 yrs and if he was my child I would probably be concerned about him in kindergarten. But it really depends on the individual child and its hard to be sure until it gets close.

Well your situation is different because you were younger than the cut off. It isn't like you were actually held back, you weren't red-shirted if you weren't 5 at the cut off. This is completely different from holding back a kid that is the right age at cut off.
J & A definitely would not be. Declan will be mid-June, but I doubt we would with him either. Although the thought of delaying him so we don't have 3 in college at the same time has its perks.

I'm opposed to red shirting unless there is a serious academic or social problem. Ari will start when he is just about 4.5.
I agree. Our cut off for K is age 5 by 9/30 so Olivia will be about 5.5 when she starts. This baby is due the end of July and unless there is some thing major going on, I do not plan to hold back just due to a late birthday.

We have been sending on time. DS1 started this year at 5 1/2. DS2 has a September bday and will start in fall 2015 and DD will start fall 2017.
My brother and SIL decided to hold back their July baby a year because while doing interviews for private schools, the people told them they didn't think he was ready for kindergarten. It was the right decision for them and he's been doing great this year in K.
We will send e on time. I teach. k/1 and teachers do so much differentiating. Even if he's one of the younger kids, he will be fine. He's in the 1% for size, so I'm a little bit worried about him being the teeny, tiny kid in class, but that isn't a reason to send /not send him in my opinion.
Public school here has a 12/31 cutoff, so C will be on the mid to older side. He's the youngest in his daycare class and is learning a ton from the older kids, so I think it's an advantage now. Plus, I want to stop paying for daycare/preschool ASAP.
My birthday was a week before our cutoff, so I was always one of the youngest in my class. The school wanted me to skip first grade, but my parents didn't because I would've been really young then -- 5 at the start of 2nd grade.
We will send DS2 late. Our cutoff is April 15 and he is April 6 so it's a 10-day red shirting LOL. I am find with it, he is small and I'd prefer him to be with the next group of kids.
I would only have my kid go early or late if they were very close to the cut off and I thought they would be ready a year early or not ready yet. The cut off here is Oct 1st. I thought that was kinda weird. So since dh was born in late sept and I was in early nov, we would still be in different grades. I thought that was interesting.
