I've day dreamed about having a nursery, looked on pinterest/etsy etc. But now that it's time to actually start working on one, I feel so overwhelmed and indecisive. I know it's somewhat ridiculous and the baby won't care what his nursery looks like. But, I seem to be fixating on it lately.
I know I want something simple/clean/not busy. I want it to be blue/grey. Dh had a few design ideas. But I feel like I can't commit.
I could have written this post. I was so day dreamy about the nursery before getting pg, but when it really came down to it, I've been totally indecisive.
I pretty easily picked a color scheme by looking at gender neutral nurseries on Pinterest and DH is making the crib by hand, so we picked a woodworking plan early on. But other than that I just felt swamped.
I spent a ton of time researching glider/rockers online and got totally frustrated. I finally just went to a bunch of furniture stores and found something I liked. It was an easier decision to do in real life rather than looking online - you kind of have to go sit in chairs to know what you like.
Other than that, I've found I don't care as much as I thought about a lot of things. I think Pinterest helps a lot, but after a certain point it can hamstring you into feeling that everything has to be magazine-perfect or else it's not going to be good enough. The rest of my house doesn't look straight out of a magazine so why should I put so much pressure on myself to make the nursery that way? It will be a cozy, relaxing room and full of lots of handmade items from people who love us and the baby. That is what I finally decided was most important.
We are converting a current guest room into the nursery and the guest bed has to stay (nowhere else in the house to put it). So that limits the space and design somewhat. I was looking for inspirations on apartment therapy but got overwhelmed by all the perfectly coordinated nurseries as I know ours will never be like that. I'm going to simplify and do grey/white paint with red accents. We're getting a hand-me-down bassinet and glider, so the only furniture we really need to get is a small dresser. I plan to source it from a local antique shop or Ikea.

We definitely need to go to some stores to check things out.
And you make a good point about the magazine nursery. I don't want to let myself get too obsessed with it being "perfect". I think I feel like I need to pick a theme, and that's when it gets to be really overwhelming.
I knew I wanted white furniture, so the crib and dresser were easy (white, clean lines). I figured out what color(s) I preferred, and then found something to focus on, and built from there. I found a bedding set where I really liked the quilt, and knew I wanted to hang it on the wall. It was majority purple, and had accents of seafoam/turquoise, which was already the color of the walls. There's also some berry pink and light pink in it and in the coordinating dust ruffle and window valance, so we ended up incorporating bits of pink elsewhere as well. The color of the recliner and other small decorative items (some prints, a lamp, etc.) came after figuring out the bigger items. But we definitely narrowed our choices once we found an item/palette to focus on.
I found bedding that I fell in love with and then decorated everything around the bedding. Maybe start there? I know it can be overwhelming because there are so many choices out there but pick a few stores you usually shop at and look there first.
Also could have written this post! I was so excited to start planning the nursery, and had pinned quite a few things after getting my BFP. I didn't really start any planning until we found out the gender. I was overwhelmed because there was just so much out there. I knew I wasn't going to do a bedding set so getting inspiration from one I loved was out. I also didn't want a "theme" as that's just not me. I ended up looking at my Pinterest board and I decided to go in the direction of what I had pinned the most of. Which turned out to be kind of a shabby-chic girly but not wow pink threw up in here nursery. Here is my main inspiration theeclecticlife.wordpress.com/2011/02/page/2/. I am totally in love with the direction I am going in with it. The crib will be white, and the dresser probably will be too. The nursery will be our spare room, which is very small. So it's going to be scaled down some.
I would say Pinterest is probably my favorite resource. Maybe try typing blue/grey nursery into the search? Grey is super popular right now so maybe something that pops up will pique your interest.
I thought it was easier NOT to pick a theme. I picked a crib and colors and built from there.
I just got done planning a wedding in which Pinterest caused me more anxiety than it should. I was better able to say "screw this" for the nursery. LOL! Sorry little man.

Thanks for all the feedback! I'm glad to hear I'm not alone in feeling overwhelmed by this whole thing. I'm thinking I need to let go of the "theme" idea. I feel like that could cause me to go overboard and end up with a busy/cluttered nursery.

I struggled with this for a while. We'd already painted the nursery aqua and then I saw a grey crib that I loved so we went from there. It's gonna be aqua and grey with penguins cause I'm a dork.

I am a few days behind you and feel the same way. I think we're going to go with a blue/gray or blue/brown scheme, but that's as far as I've gotten. We need to move H's office furniture out of the future nursery before we can start setting it up, but we have nowhere to put his office stuff. Sigh. My MO has been avoidance so far.
ETA: H has requested a teddy bear theme because he is kind of obsessed with Teddy Roosevelt. LOLOL

Love the idea of penguins
Dh and I just measured the room and figured out where things would go. I'm feeling better already.

Yeah, we need to move some random stuff out of the room. The plan is to tackle that this weekend. I wish I could snap and have it done!

I struggled and spent untold hours pinning. I choose bedding first, buts it back-ordered. Then we painted the room and I feel as though the back-ordered bedding doesn't match the paint which I love and overall I feel like a nursery planning failure.
I agree that it was easier NOT to pick a theme but in picking out things I liked, I ended up with one anyway. My current strategy is to buy if it it "speaks to me". Cliche, I know, but I feel like that's whats working/easier for me now. Buying quality strategic pieces that have a story or reason why I choose them.
I am totally drawn to "themes" because I gravitate to stupid little trinkets for kid stuff (even though I HATE them in the rest of my life), but I'm trying to fight that impulse. I love LOVE blue and coral as a color scheme, but it seems more girl-y to me, and we don't know what we're having yet.. so aside from white furniture, I haven't made any real decisions yet. But I will definitely try to avoid the pinterest trap at all costs. I am just so glad pinterest wasn't around during my wedding planning days!
I'm the most boring mom on earth and I'm not doing any theme or decorations.
We have a regular bedroom set in there now, and will add a crib, glider, and a changing table. The walls are already tan. Once the kid is old enough to have an opinion on how they'd like their room, I am happy to go all out with whatever theme they'd like. It's just not something that I'm worried about right now.

This is what I'm doing too. Whenever I decorate any room, I pick one main element (bedding, rug, curtains, etc. but pick one thing) and pull the rest of the room's colors from that. It's so much easier to choose a wall color from a piece of fabric than to try and match fabric to an existing wall color.
When I was pregnancy in the spring (I m/ced) I bought a large yellow hot air balloon. I paid enough $ for it that there was no way I wouldn't use it when the time came. It, combined with the fact that DH really wanted to paint a mural, helped us come up with the theme (Dr. Seuss - the Lorax and Oh the Places You Will Go)…so those two books helped us to pick the colour scheme. Then we went from there.

I knew we wanted dark furniture to match the rest of the house. Then I got inspired by a piece of artwork on Land of Nod and came up with a loose theme based on the art. Once I knew what type of patterns I was looking for, it was easy to find things.

I'm pretty sure we'll go with basic bedding (stripes/dots/solid colors etc). Do you think it's still important to pick that out first before paint? I've never painted a room, so this is new to me. I'm thinking of doing a light blue/grey color. I guess I assumed if we went with a pretty light/basic color it wouldn't hinder us in regards to bedding/rug etc. The furniture will be white.

I felt this way as well. I'm not really into decorating and have a hard time picturing the finished product so I took things one step at a time.
I looked into the crib we wanted and once I knew that it would be white, that helped shape the rest of the nursery. It also helped to wait until we found out what we were having and did little planning before that. I had several "theme" ideas but threw them out when nothing really came to be in my mind. I found cute prints on etsy (via pinterest) and found a fabric that I liked for the closet "doors."
I tried to find small details that went together instead of coming up with a big picture. Hope that helps! Try not to get overwhelmed. If it becomes too much, step away from it for a while. You never know when inspiration may strike!
As you can see from my thread below, I am agonizing over this too! Price put a lot of limits on my plans, sadly.
We are also just picking some colors and not really having a theme. (They can be adorable, but it is easier for me not to worry about them!) I am picking 3 completely unrelated crib sheets to register for, and that is about it for patterns in the room.
We are planning to move (WERE planning to move by this summer) but now I don't know if we will have our house ready for the market, have it sold, find a new house, be able to close on it and actually MOVE by October. At this point I don't plan to rush and I don't want to be in the middle of all that crap when the baby gets here! (my god, can you imagine nesting while everything is in boxes???)
So, the guest bedroom, which needs to be re-done anyway, is going to be the nursery, but I can't go too big with it b/c we want to keep the house ready to sell. Neutral colors and some minimal furniture is all I'm doing. Probably won't even have things hung on the walls. I always had great plans for a nursery but I'm pretty sure if the baby comes before the move (which I'm sure will happen) I'll just have to wait to make "The Nursery" I wanted in the new house because I know we won't be here long after.
I am overwhelmed because we have to do some work in that room (new windows, carpet, and trim) before we can do anything. Plus pick decorations. Too much!

We did paint actually before we found out the sex. We are putting our house up for sale this summer and wanted something neutral on the walls so went with a tan. Then I found the bedding and worked around that for art and decorations. I think a good neutral wall color like the one you posted is a great start and you can find bedding to match, but it is much easier to pick fabric and then a wall color in my opinion

I always always start with fabric first. Paint can be tricky - colors always have undertones and sometimes look different in your room and in different lighting. My master bedroom is a "neutral" color (came with the house) but I had ordered some drapes only to find out that the undertones in the two colors totally clashed.
H picked a paint color, said he liked jungle themes. So we are going with that! H usually doesn't care much and expresses zero interest in such things, so when he did I was super excited and rolled with it!
Probably not helpful. Well, maybe, has your h said anything?
Dh did have a suggestion (space). And while it wouldn't have been something I would have probably picked on my own--I am excited that he is excited/came up with an idea. Now that I've done some more looking on etsy/pinterest, I feel more excited about it. And I think we'll go very light on the "theme". Just a few things.
