I'll get 5 weeks of STD for if everything proceeds normally, but it will cover less than 40% of my salary because I am one of the more generously compensated employees where I work. I will probably take the exclusion period unpaid, as I hardly have any PTO now and want to go on another vacation before the baby is born. I think I'll have virtually no PTO at all when the baby is born.
I think I will try to return to work half time after 6 weeks. Under FMLA and our related state laws, if I only take 6 weeks up front I should be entitled to work half time for another 12 weeks. Hopefully they will allow me to work half time for the whole first year, but I want to demonstrate my value as a part time employee while I'm protected under FMLA.
4 weeks prior to EDD on STD at 55%, and using my sick leave to supplement the balance to get full pay.
6 months total time off post-delivery broken down as follows:
- 6-8 weeks post delivery on STD at 55%.
- Remainder of time with partial pay by using 41 hours of accrued vacation & leave time per 80 hour pay period; 39 hours of unpaid leave each pay period. This way the office still picks up my benefits premiums and I continue to accrue leave on a pro rata basis.
I get no paid leave. I have enough banked time between vacation and sick time to be able to get paid for the whole 12 weeks. I don't know if they start taking from sick or vacation time first.
I am in the same situation...I have to tell them which is sick time and which is vacation time. In my case the sick time is limited to the hospital stay and doctor's appointments.
In short, I am taking 12 weeks off and a few of those weeks will be unpaid. My first week (7 day elimination period), will be stored vacation time. Then I will have 6 or 8 weeks of STD. My previous OB only gave us 6 weeks for a C section, not sure how my current OB will handle it. Then I will use the balance of my vacation and personal time, Then I am guessing that will leave about 2 weeks unpaid.

I get no ML (ironically since I'm a teacher. You'd think since I'm in the business of nurturing kids I'd get the chance to nurture my own for a little while). I have to use accrued sick time. I have about 18 days of sick time. From my due date to the end of school is 20 working days. So, I could feasibly get by with only taking 2 unpaid days to make it until summer at which point I'd begin receiving my check again at full pay. But who knows if I want to work all the way until my due date. So I may take off at 39 weeks and have to file FMLA for a week and use sick days for the balance.
I can take 4 months by the state law. The problem is my health care. My employer doesn't pay for it if I don't work 70 hours in a month. I will get 6 weeks of disability. I have to figure out how I get health care for the rest of the time. I think FMLA counts towards a disability waiver with the health care.
We don't have any paid leave or STD. I plan on taking 12 weeks off. I have about 2 months of vacation/sick leave saved to use and the remainder will be unpaid.
I teach, and my baby is due on the first day of school in September. I will take 6 weeks of sick time fully paid, and then another six weeks partially paid through my private disability insurance and state STD (still confused on exactly how much time/money it will be.) The rest of my time will be unpaid. I plan to go back at the start of the second semester at the end of January so I will get a fresh start with new students, classes etc.

Another Canadian chiming in here. I get 8 weeks at 100% of my pay and then another 44 weeks at $500/week (employment insurance).
I'm most surprised by the American federal government workers getting no paid mat leave. In Canada, federal workers get something like 92% of their salary for an entire year. My H is just starting with our federal police force so won't be taking any paternal leave this time but with our next one, we think we will split the leave as he will get paid 92% of his salary vs. my $500/week.

whoops…I wrote that I get 10 weeks at 100%, I just realized as I read yours that it is only 8, lol.
i will be home for 22 weeks altogether. i am a teacher and due in july. i will have about 4 weeks from the end of school until my due date. then will have about 6 weeks of summer break left before my 12 weeks of FMLA starts with the beginning of the next school year. of those 12 weeks i will have 6 (or 8) weeks paid, depending on vaginal vs. c-section, then will be unpaid for the remaining 6 or 4 weeks. we have to burn our sick time before STD kicks in, and i have exactly 6 weeks of sick time so i will either not use my STD at all or get 2 weeks covered with it if i end up with a c section.
For those whose doctor "wrote them out" prior to delivery - I'm assuming for bed rest:
Was that covered under STD (if you have that as a benefit at your workplace) and does it impact the time off you're allotted after the birth?
I had a premature birth last time, so my OB already told me that he is going to write me off at 36 weeks, if not earlier. My job is perceived as stressful and seems to make OBs nervous, even though my actual current assignment is fairly low key.
At my office it doesn't affect the amount of STD one is entitled to post-birth. It could affect total time off depending on whether one needs to supplement STD with PTO in order to pay the bills.
I am already off. It works out to 20 days off, I took 5 days off in lieu/personal time, the remaining 15 days are medical bed rest days. Between my swollen feet and the stress of my job combined with ppd/a, it just wasn't working. If I were still teaching I would have gone to half days and worked only mornings but that doesn't work in my current role so I just left at a natural break right after March break, at 36 weeks. I am also already measuring at 40 weeks as of yesterday, nicely uncomfortable.

I was wondering how you scored the extra two weeks. I thought we were in the same union!

Lol. I am no longer in the union as admin but I get almost the same working conditions and the exact same mat/parenting leave. So yeah, 8w. You know who gets it good? If you work at ETFO head office you get 18 months topped up to 100%. I should have tried to get a contract there for a few years while I have the kids before going into admin, lol.
I'm Canadian but am foolishly having my baby here in the UK where maternity leave is nowhere near as good. I get 6 weeks at 90% of my pay, and then a paltry £138 per week thereafter. H is still finishing up his PhD so we can really only afford for me to take about 4 months, maybe 6 if he lands a job in the fall. There are companies here who have their own maternity benefits that are a lot better than statutory, but alas I do not work for any of them.
I'm really glad I read this post, as it prompted me to confirm with my HR rep what is and isn't covered. And as it turns out, I don't really have paid "maternity leave" as it is sold in the benefits. I can take off up to 12w. 6 (or 8, for c-section) are paid at 70% through STD. First 5 days you have to use sick leave. After STD, you can use sick or vacay to extend. We get 96 hours of sick at the beginning of the year; by the time I get through with the normal dr appointments and the 5 days, I'll maybe have 8-12 hours left for pedi appts thru 12/31. Our vacation is screwy, you get 15 days and can roll over up to 5 each "vacation year," which runs 4/1-3/31. So in theory you might be able to save up your other leave to pay for what STD didn't cover, but it would require so much planning and perfect timing to make it work. I'm glad to have something, but it's not what I expected. On the bright side I guess I can look forward to my 3, 100% October paychecks (we get paid every other week)...

Yep, benefits for federal employees are generally pretty good, but mat leave is a major area where they're lacking. And in this political climate, I don't see that changing any time soon.
I have 10 weeks of sick and vacation banked. I've worked here three years and saved my time as much as possible. I will either take then and go back with zero time or take 12 and have two unpaid.
