I am learning that a lot of yarn is designed for knitting and that crochet work doesn't show off the yarn as well. I bought several hand dyed yarns at a craft show before I knew this, and I am looking for a good crochet pattern to use one up. It's worsted weight, 420 yards. Any pattern suggestions?
Here is the sweater I made with one of them. It's cute, but not as cute as I'll bet it would have been had I knitted it.
Have you done a search on Ravelry? You can put the yarn name in (or find a similar one, if it's not in the database) and see what other people have crocheted with it. It kinds of depends on the individual yarn, at least sometimes, I think.

Eta: I think that sweater is really cute!
These are local folks who do hand dyed work, so their yarn isn't really out there in Ravelry to search for, unfortunately. And, I am not skilled enough to even know what else to search for. :/
Thanks about the sweater though! I am not totally unhappy, except that I know that I could have showcased the yarn better if I knew how to knit. Add that to the list of reasons I need to learn!
I would also suggest patterns that use single crochet and/or chains and/or slip stitches because that will allow the colour to spread out more. Each double crochet stitch takes up three lengths of yarn which is going to compress the colour variation. Going smaller would spread it out
