We already have a camera. We bought our camera in November 2012 for a vacation we had to Europe. We bought a Nikon D3200 from Amazon. We love our camera, it takes pictures and video so I think that is all we need. We also both have iPhones so we could use that for extra video if we wanted to.
I have a dslr. We bought it maybe 8 months after DD2 was born. It has the auto settings so you don't HAVE to know how to use it right away. I'm slowly by slowly learning how to do things. Even on the auto settings, though, it takes fantastic pictures.

My H already has a really nice DSLR, so we will probably bring that, along with our phones. I don't know that I would buy a special camera for the birth though, if we didn't already have one.
We're planning on purchasing a mid-range DSLR as a joint Mother's Day/Father's Day present. I have a low-range one that's busted and the cost of repairing it just doesn't make sense. As a pp stated, the auto settings work just fine, and there are plenty of blogs that teach you tips and techniques. Occasionally I'll see a workshop pop up on Groupon too. That's about as far as I'm planning to take it since I have no aspirations to be a momtographer.
Honestly, if film was still the only way to take pictures I'd probably beg for my dad's vintage Pentax. Who needs IG filters when you can have the real thing? It still works perfectly.
As far as video goes, we'll likely just use our iPhones. I'm not a big video person.
I have a Cannon Rebel T3i dSLR that I love. I started off on auto because it was overwhelming at first, but I read a couple of books and then took a couple of classes and I'm considerbly more comfortable with it.
It's a good investment. It's not like you're buying it just for the birth, but to capture the next couple of years (and beyond!).
I have a P&S right now and plan to use that and cell phone for labor. I really want a DSLR but not sure we can swing the price. Canon Rebel is very user friendly. I have a friend with one and she basically does it like a point and shoot. She will use the zoom and her pictures come out so clear and look almost edited, but they aren't. There are a bunch of add ons you can get but don't necessarily need.
DH bought me a DSLR for Christmas. He bought it a week after we found out we were pregnant the second time. Yes, it can be complicated to learn but it also has great auto settings that you can default to until you learn. I'm not sure that we will use this in delivery/hospital (most likely just P&S) but plan to use it at home for everyday use.
we got one when a good deal showed up at costco. we had been planning to upgrade to a DSLR anyway as our point and shoot is about 5 years old. er have just used auto so far but SIL is a photographer and will give us a few basic lessons this spring when we see her.
