In recognition of America's insatiable craving for chicken, chicken-like food products, and Frankenfoods, KFC is resurrecting its stomach-turning bunless chicken sandwich, the Double Down. The monster was first introduced in 2010, but its availability in the U.S. has been limited over the past few years.
KFC's parent company, Yum! Brands, apparently ran out of ideas for weird things it could dare Americans to eat after unleashing a pizza crust made of cheeseburgers, the Taco Bell waffle taco, and the fried chicken corsage (hashtag #prom). Besides, they're honor-bound to fire back after Domino's launched a pizza with chicken instead of crust this week.
The Double Down will be back April 21, at which point you will be bombarded with a "Double Down Dare" campaign as Yum! executives feast on actual food cooked over a pile of burning money and give each other high fives.
"Not gonna lie; I kind of keep expecting you to post one day that you threw down on someone who clearly had no idea that today was NOT THEIR DAY." ~dontcallmeshirley
I tried the double down when it came out the first time. I believe in salt, but my god it was sooooo salty. I desperately needed water after two bites.
I have been wanting to know if there anything taco-ish about it. Is it just a waffle, eggs, and sausage folded up like a taco? Because if the only thing that makes it a taco is the folding, then could YUM do the same thing at Pizza Hut, minus the folding, and calling it a waffle pizza?

I would eat the waffle taco and a waffle pizza.
I just really like waffles and think they make a great base for other yummy things.

Let's just say the mortadella and pancake sandwich from the other week was much better.
So I went to Taco Bell with the express purpose of trying their breakfast. I have no shame!
I was pretty hungover and it was the first weekend they were doing it. We showed up at like 10:45 am and they do it until 11 am. We walked in and they offered to make us anything off the normal menu, too.
So since we were going crazy I ordered a meal with the sausage waffle taco. It came with two cinna-bon bites and a hot coffee. I also ordered - on the side - an "am crunch wrap" with bacon. My H got the sausage waffle taco, a hash brown, and an "am crunch wrap" with sausage. Then the manager came by and gave us breakfast tacos, too!!! So we really had everything on the menu.
I totally drizzled syrup ALL over the waffle taco. It was good, but kind of bland. The waffle was kind of dry yet also spongey.
The best item on the breakfast menu was definitely the AM crunchwrap with sausage. It has the spicy cheese sauce that they put in the quesadilla and other stuff. Plus eggs, sausage, hash brown, etc!!! The "meal" comes with either a hash brown or the cinnabon bites. The cinnabon bites are like diabetes waiting to happen. Too sweet even for me.

I have been dying to try the AM crunchwrap thing. I'm glad to hear that it's worth the calories.
