I used to live in Sioux Falls, SD and loved it, but I can't speak for the rest of the state since I consider Sioux Falls to be the best city in the state. The other side of the state has the black hills though, which are pretty.

It would be Ellsworth AFB. Which most people who have been there loved it.

My H did field training at Ellsworth years ago. That's all I got on that.
We are in MT, about 9 hours from Boise, and I'm assuming the weather in ID is similar. Summers are gorgeous up here. Winters are...winter. This year in particular was the harshest of our 3 here. The plus side is we actually see the sun quite a bit in the winter. I probably shouldn't share how cold is got here this winter though. lol
We didn't really winterize or do anything special to our cars. We have winter tires with better tread, but that's it. We actually bought tire chains for my car and used them in CA in the mountains but haven't needed them yet here.
I was at Mountain Home for three years and loved every minute of it. I was sad to move.
There is a ton of outdoorsy stuff to do there....hiking, hunting, fishing...and if you're not into that (I'm not) there's boating in the summer and skiing in the winter. I didn't ski when I got there, but was pretty damn good by the time I left.
Boise is amazing, and a lot o people live there and commute (better schools).
The weather is fine. It's not that cold in the winter. We got some snow, but not enough to need AWD/4WD or even snow tires. My Honda Accord Coupe did great. Okay, to drive TO some of the ski mountains you might appreciate something with AWD/4WD....
If this is where you're going, PM me if you want to chat or want more info.
This makes it better than someone coming and packing and moving everything??? Because of the extra money?? I've always wondered. Lol. Â
Yes. You're going to have to drive all the way there anyway, so let the movers handle the big stuff and get a liiiiittle extra for transporting your valuables. Â
Everyone always says you make a ton of money when you do a DITY. That's false. Your money comes from your dislocation allowance and per diems. You make very little extra cash from the actual process of moving, so have someone else handle it. lol
Ok that's what I thought.. We never did a DITY... And I never will. I have enough physical bodies to move, let alone stuff. The AF will be moving us. Lol

This is one of the possibilities so I will definitely let you know if we are stationed there. Thank you for your feedback!!

Late on this, but I live in Omaha and it's a great place to live The winter isn't always fun, but no worse than a lot of places- we've hardly gotten any snow this winter.

South Dakota has a great standard of living. It actually gets a lot of transplants because their industries are growing (we looked at moving to Sioux Falls at one point because it was a growing, thriving city).
I'm not sure where you'd be looking at in Nebraska, but I have friends in Omaha that love it. They moved from much bigger cities and really love it there. They say that they get all the stuff that the big cities offer (concerts, shopping, etc) without having to be in a huge city.
I've never been to Idaho, but we have a friend's daughter going there in the fall for college. They just made a trip for some kind of orientation and couldn't rave about it enough.
Really, you aren't going to spend $5k at once. You can get decent winter weather gear for everyone for a less than a thousand bucks and then add jeans/sweaters/whatever as needed. I'm not sure what you think the cars will need other than decent tires (which you should have already) and ice scrapers.
Can he wait four days and turn down his orders? He should be able to get any follow on he wants, plus it saves them money not to have to move you guys. He should be raising hell.

That's the plan of attack. His first shirt is on board to raise hell with him if need be.
But if there's one thing I've learned about the military it is to NOT get my hopes up about anything. Lol.
Eta, which is why in my mind I'm already hunkered down for the winter in SD. Haha
Well having his shirt in his corner is awesome. The Air Force is different than the navy, we get spoiled. Lol. You are probably smart to plan for the worst, but hopefully it works out.

YES. omg, XH is on my ass Bc he's up for orders too. The navy is so much better in this process. Call up your detailer, tell them where you want to go, and 9 times out of 10 you'll get it. Or at least in the vicinity.
I am another Nebraska girl and actually live very close to Offutt. Omaha is a great city to raise kids in with the zoo, Children's Museum, etc. and I feel very military friendly especially Bellevue. The school I teach in has a lot of AF kids as its an easy commute from a smaller town. Pretty LCOL and even though we have very cold days and sometimes bad snowstorms, it eventually will end and spring will come! (I have to keep telling myself this as it just snowed a little on Sunday after 80 degrees on Saturday).
If you have any questions, please feel free to pm me

Lurker here-- I live right outside of Boise and have my entire life. Idaho is beautiful, tons of stuff for kids and families. Very safe. The air force base is about 30 ish mins from Boise, but people commute all the time. It is a very Republican state, not sure if that turns you off (it does me!) and there's no changing that. Plenty of Mormons, but not overrun with them. Everyone here is very nice, and there's an emphasis on education. PM me if you have any questions, I promise I'm a real person!
I'm in Omaha and I love it here. The people are great, there's always something to do, and we have tons of great restaurants. It does get cold in the winter, but it really only lasts a couple months. Fall is gorgeous here and the summers are plenty warm I'm assuming you'd be at Offutt AFB? It's right outside Omaha in one of the suburbs.
Nebraska is not cold. Also, not very snowy. Then again, I live in the frozen northland now, so it's all relative.
False. I grew up there. It is cold as shit and the winters are long.
Not really.
It gets cold but it only lasts maybe a month or two. January sucks in Nebraska, but I'm pretty sure it's not any warmer in Idaho or SD then like someone else said, our snowfall has been pretty mild the past few winters too, no big storms. We usually only get a few inches at a time, and it's not enough to keep most people off the roads.
