My most expensive stuff was china serving pieces. I think my big platters were about $300ish. I had a down comforter on there that was about that price but my mom bought that, along with a few other higher things for my shower. Oh, my kitchen aid mixer but my grandma bought me that for my shower too.
I guess I didn't feel bad having that stuff on there because it's the norm where I am. Shit, at least I didn't have special Christmas China on mine like half the people I know lol.
I don't even remember what was on our registry anymore.
I know we registered for china that was hella expensive because people (name those over 60) told me I had to. We didn't get any of it, thank God. I would not have wanted to store it.
I'll probably register for a kitchenaid mixer. Them shits are expensive as hell.
Oh yeah. I got one of those. It is still in the box.
Send it to me.
OP- the only time I've ever judged a registry is when they only have super expensive items on there. Register for whatever you want, just make sure there is a range of prices.
Oh, wedding regirstry? We honestly didn't have much on there and what we did have wasn't more than $100. We already moved in together and had what we needed. I guess our most expensive item was our BBB dishes. I think they were $90, could have been more. Anyway, I love them. Eight years later, we're still using them. I, personally, didn't want the fine china.
Now our baby shower had pricier items with our glider and baby furniture.
We registered for a jogging stroller from rei for our baby shower. It was a Thule (chariot) cheetah 2. It was an expensive item, but I figured people might do gift cards or go in together for it.

We had a $299 Simple Human trash can. I added it for the completion credit more than anything. Just add a whole bunch of things at different prices, like everyone said. People will buy what they want.
None of our stuff was really that expensive, maybe $100 knife set? We were young and poor so most of our registry were the low grade things you buy at 21 for your apt.
Most ridiculous thing? Toys/bedding for a 7 year old on a baby registry "so he wouldn't be jealous"

I have a completely clueless friend who registered for the most outrageous things possible. There was not a single thing under $100. She registered for $1000 place settlings. That's 1000 per place, not for the full set.
I should mention this was not one of my high society friends, and I can't recall a single one of my very wealthy friends ever having such an extreme registry. They were divorced within 2 years.

The most expensive thing on our registry was sheets and a comforter, which were both around the $150 range. We also had china, which I put on for the discount and was shocked to receive from my great aunts.
A friend had a really small registry and we didn't know, so when we got the invite for the wedding and I went to get a gift a week later, all that was left was a picture frame, a tortilla warmer and a tent. I ended up just sending a gift card instead.
My husband registered for a keg-a-rator, no one bought it. I can't recall what the smallest item was, probably dish towels or glasses or something practical.
Our best man gave us a bag of weed and a DVD as our wedding gift. This is a grown man who was already married- his wife had no idea and was mortified when I told her.
As long as everything isn't $100+ I think you're good. H's cousin is getting married in a couple months and the cheapest thing on her registry is something ridiculous like $150 salt and pepper shakers.

Our cookware was the most expensive and I think it was around $200? I see some people register for a $500 set and maybe they have people that will buy it but I knew no one would for us. We had some family go in and get ours. Other than that I tried to get a lot of $20-$50 range items and smaller stuff. We had a few items around $100 but I only put stuff we really wanted.
It seems like EVERYONE puts a kitchenaid stand mixer on their registry. We didn't. I ended up getting a cheaper brand for Christmas one year and it works just fine.
Also - I think some put bigger items on since they'll get the discount later but I didn't want to put stuff on we couldn't afford. We did get quite a few gift cards though which helped. And BB&B always has those 20% off coupons so I used those to get some items I wanted that weren't bought.
One of my cousin's FI registered for a washer and dryer- her bridesmaids bought them along with hideous dresses and dyed to match shoes. She also registered for a bunch of silver flatware but didn't get any.
My niece's friend registered for 17 random mixing/serving bowls. She lives in a tiny condo and never entertains. She also registered for a Vitamix. Her besties chipped in for it.
One of my cousins registered for 30 bath sheets. WTF?
I heard of donations to student loans as a registery item but haven't actually seen that yet.
