All of the replies here with personal anecdotes are making me feel positive for you. I hope you are feeling more positive too.
Good luck, iamali. Its tough stuff and you're a good parent. Of course you are worried. But you are asking the right questions, getting good guidance from your doctors. Hugs.
I have a few friends who were on that drug when we were young and they had ADHD and anxiety like your son was diagnosed. They were definitely not zombies and had very lively personalities. So just anecdotal but maybe some reassurance!

I have to talk many clients down when they hear anti psychotic who do not fit the criteria. Many drugs are used for off label reasons. Ignore the primary reasons. Pay attention to whether it helps him and does not have side effects. If tho is true, you have found a good med. if not, there are others to try. (((Hugs)))
I know "anti psychotic" is a scary name for a medication but meds are used off-label all the time. I hope this helps him.
Big hugs to you.
Remind me: how old is he again? What's his diagnosis?
Risperdone is labeled and indicated to treat kids with irritability, specifically in kids with autism. So it's not an off-label use.
Ali, big hugs. I hope it really helps your son. I'll add another positive anecdote that I used to have several clients that did really well on this med. Hang in there.

Work me: A lot of the clients I work with (ASD) have been on it at some point. Like any drug, for some it was the right fit, and others not. I would recommend taking some sort of data (before if you can for a day or two), and while on it so you can look for changes (positive or concerning) - not just anecdotal observations. Sometimes it's helpful to see, "oh, in those last few days before it, there were 6 meltdowns/day, and yes, even though we just had an epic one today and right now it feels like we're not seeing changes, we're actually only averaging one or two a day now." Same goes for sleep/weight/appetite changes, etc.
Mom me: (Hugs) I am sure it is a scary class of drugs to hear, but I really hope it gives back your same little boy, but with fewer struggles for you both. You're doing the right thing but looking at all your options and working with your doctor to try and deal with the anger. Be kind to yourself and remember that in your moments of doubt - you're just trying to find the right solution.

J started medicine this week. Its heartbreaking but I'm hopeful at the same time. So far he still full of personality and isn't acting like a Zombie. He seems less angry and having an easier time at school. Its only been 4 days.
