My dad owned his own business for years. The name was our last name and then the product that he sold (e.g. Hansen's Cheese or Martin's Ovens - similar to those).
As far as names that turn me off or confuse me: there is a store here that is the lingerie brand from Lane Bryant called Cacique. The pronunciation is confusing.
Are you thinking of opening your own business? My dad volunteers for the SCORE organization. Ever heard of them? They'd be able to help you with resources if you're starting your own business.
I have a bakery with 2 partners. We went back & forth on the name because we wanted a name that had an insect in it (think Butterfly). Several people warned us about trying to sell food with an insect/bug in our name, and more importantly, our logo. In the end we went with it and when we had our logo designed, we had it created a little more cartoonish to keep people from associating our baked goods with bugs in them.
jaycee I think it's pronounced Ka-seek, but I'm confused by it too!

I think you're right about the pronunciation. They have the phonetic pronunciation listed underneath the sign. Like this:Attachment Deleted
I think it's so ridiculous that you have to tell people how to pronounce your name right on the sign! They must know it's hard to say.

Oh, ok - that's cool - thank you!
Yes. Since college, I've been operating under my name, which doesn't explain what I do and is easy to forget. Now that I've been getting a steadier flow of work, I want to register but I'd like to have a name that people actually remember my work by. I feel like using my name makes it seem like I'm creating a fan page/business about myself, which isn't the case. If that makes sense, lol.
I haven't ever heard of the SCORE organization - I will check them out. Thanks!
Definitely check out SCORE. It's made of retired business executives that give free business advice. You can meet with them and ask a bunch of questions or they're available via email.

Cool! Since having the logo done and deciding on the name, has anyone mentioned the bug as being an issue? I guess I can see how someone's mind might go there, but I never would have thought of that! I just want the yummy things inside the bakery. lol.
And I agree with @jacyee with Cacique - it's really unfortunate that they have to have the correct pronunciation on all of their advertising!
Luckily, no, no one has said anything about it. It hadn't occurred to us either, but when gathering info and asking others for advice, it came up a few times.

We came up with a variety of words that showed what we felt was important about our business and then pinged a list of names off of our friends in the same field as us.
Turns out one that we really liked our friends immediately associated with a very negative political connotation. Ooops.
We also checked with the state to make sure no one had our name taken for a corporation.
