It was one of the species we considered (I think we looked at 8-10 total). We liked that it was hard and that it was more affordable than some of the other exotics, but it has a lot of red in it, which I didn't want.
After talking to a few flooring pros we're going with a medium-dark stained hickory. It's harder than oak so it will hold up well and we found one in a stain that goes well throughout our house.
If you go with Santos Mahogany, make sure they take a moisture reading of your subfloor and leave the required expansion gaps. A lot of the south american woods expand and contract more than domestic woods, so you can run into big issues with buckling or gapping if the installer doesn't know what they're doing.
Thanks for the reply! I am afraid of the red too . . . but it is what DH likes the most. (I like it, I just don't think it is the best decision for open concept in this space) Back to the drawing board.
