I don't use boy shorts so idk, but I just get Hanes. My pp with dd was a heavy period and I may have ruined a few.
Always infinity with wings. Hands down. Don't get anything else.
I got colace. Take that as soon as you give birth. Seriously. The first poop is no joke. It's like birthing a second child. I also filled the pain meds but I only took one or two
At least with me when my milk came it came like a damn breaking. Get some nursing pads. I also would get a sleep nursing bra. Somethino nice and forgiving that you can wear around the house and out if needed. I didn't have anything and I couldn't fit in anything. I had to orderase bras online and go braless for a few days. Not pleasant.
Please expound on what you purchased, how many, and any recommendations. Especially 2nd time or recent moms who have done this before.
-Underwear: How many pairs of granny panties? Are boy shorts good? Do you know where I can find packages of all black?
My hospital has given be 7-8 pairs of XL mesh panties. I wouldn't wear my own underwear right now. I think by the time I go home, tomorrow, I'll be fine to wear my own, however. (normal size) -Pads: What kind, and how many? (I never use them for periods, so truly, clueless here)
Not sure - still using the hospital pads. 1 every 4 hours or so. -Peri bottle: Does the hospital give you one, or do I need to buy?
They have given me 2. -Creams: What creams/lotions/other should I get?
They have given me dermaplast spray, aloe wipes, tucks pads. I've only used the spray which has some sort of numbing agent in it, I think.
-Medication: Should I have anything on hand? They've given me motrin and stool softener. I've had no need for anything else. But bring lotion! It is dry here.
-Nursing pads: Is this something I should buy in advance? Kind of clueless about them... I bought a bunch before but haven't used any.
-Nursing bras: Should this wait until my milk comes in and I know my size? I would wait. At 36 hrs PP my boobs already a lot bigger.
I will answer best I can, but my I gave birth in the UK so not all my answers would apply to you.
-Underwear: I went to a shop here called Primark. It is a really cheap place so you don't mind throwing underwear away. I bought granny style/Bridget Jones style panties in black. They were also 100% cotton.
-Pads: I bought maternity pads at the time, a couple of packs. But at the time we were told to avoid normal/night time pads. I think this advice has now changed.
-Peri bottle: N/A
-Creams: My best advice would be to get some arnica tablets to help heal the bruising quickly. And coarse salt for your bath. I had second degree tears and my mom told me to pour some in a warm bath and sit in the spot where I poured it. Best advice ever.
-Medication: Paracetamol and senokot maybe. My midwife gave me senokot last time, but I am not sure if that is just a UK thing.
-Nursing pads: I would have at least a box on hand. And maybe put some cabbage in the fridge. Cabbage leaves help relief the pain, especially when your milk comes in.
-Nursing bras: I went to a specialist store called Mothercare at 38 weeks and got measured. They then sold me a few bra's in the size I would need and they were right. I am sure Motherhood will do it too.
-Nursing tanks: I never had nursing tanks last time. I plan on getting some this time.
-Other: A towel twisted in a ring to sit on is handy, especially if you tear. And having a few easy to reach snacks are handy. If you plan on nursing be prepared to get hungry and thirsty often. And maybe some post partum/nursing vitamins?
-Underwear: I think granny panties work better then boy shorts. I also appreciated higher waisted panties because they stayed in place over the saggy belly. I would say 8-10 pairs unless you do laundry frequently. The PP bleeding can be unpredictable. I have bled: DD1-4 weeks, DS-2 weeks, and DD2- 7and a half weeks and started my period at 8 weeks. Be prepared.
-Pads: Anything with wings to keep them in place. Don't overbuy (see above) because you may not need them.
-Peri bottle: the hospital always gave me one.
-Creams: Lanolin for the sore nipples and some lotion because the hospital can be dry.
-Medication: Ibuprofen/Advil and something for constipation. I can not take Colace because is has the opposite effect on me.
-Nursing pads: You can but I really only leaked with my first one. So, I never used them with the others. A small supply is not a bad idea.
-Nursing bras: I bought some sleeping nursing bras for the first 2 or 3 weeks. My boobs were huge then, like triple size, and then settled into a size after that. I then went out and bought bras.
-Nursing tanks: Have never owned any. I wore regular tanks with a shelf bra and they were fine.
-Other: I always get the munchies when I am nursing. I also had a big cup that was insulated so that I could drink lots of water. With my first DH had to make a late night Wal-Mart run for a few things. He went to CVS with my third at 12:00 to talk to the Pharmacist about lanolin cream. So, don't overbuy. You can always get things later.
underwear: I wore the same underwear pre pg, pg, and pp. I have VS cotton hip huggers and love them and still wear them! They have been great pp and never resorted to granny panties. I wore mesh panties in the hospital but then went back to my own when I got home.
pads: I have been using always infinity overnights and regulars during the day. I lived in the overnights 24/7 for about a week before I felt comfortable switching to regulars during the day. I tried making the padsicles everyone raves about and hated them! They were way too cold and the aloe ended up melting and dripping down my legs.
Peri bottle: the hospital gave me mine and I still use it 2.5 weeks pp. Life saver!
Meds: A lot of people recommend Colace. I never had to take anything for my bowels and am actually really sensitive to colace. My first pp bowel movement was pp day 1 and have been regular since without meds. I would recommend having lots of ibuprofen on hand. I had a script for 600mg Motrin tabs but just took my OTC Advil instead and was taking it every 6 hours for almost a week. The hospital gave me a can of the blue dermoplast which was really nice to have the first week or so for my second degree tear and stitches. Tucks pads if you have any issues with hemorrhoids.
Nursing supplies: I went with reusable breast pads--Bamboobies specifically--and have 6 day time and 2 overnight sets. This has worked well for me as I don't really leak much. Nursing tanks---I have lived in these the last 2.5 weeks and have 4 of them but feel like I need a good weeks worth. I have two from H&M and two from target. I love my H&M ones because of how cheap they are and they fit great! The target ones are pretty nice as well. I have three bras but only wear one at this point and it is a soft, stretchy bra--almost sports bra style. I haven't quite figured out a real bra and find them ackward right now.
Between the boards and friends, here's my list (keep in mind some hospitals supply these things and some don't) -
- 10 pairs granny panties. Found a good deal at Costco for a 5 pack for $10. They had various styles and colors. Size up.
- my hospital provides a peri bottle but you can buy at amzn
- take tucks, dermoplast, and prep h to hospital. Also, colace (or the like and start taking as soon as you can)
- take gown and nursing tanks/tops with loose pants to hospital. To wear when done with hospital gown.
- I'm picking up a few more of the stretchy sports bra nursing bras to have on hand. Also plan on buying one cup-style nursing bra to have on hand in a slightly bigger size. Will reassess needs after milk comes in.
- I bought some of the disposable laniaoh nursing pads since apparently it's common for milk to leak during the night.
- my hospital provides some nipple creams, but I would have on hand of they don't.
- my hospital provides a sitz bath which some people find feels nice. (It's a contraption that fits in the spot you sit in on the toilet and fill with warm water. Also promotes healing in the tissues down there per our childbirth class instructor.)
- I still need to buy pads and have heard to stockpile the ones the hospital gives you and then buy the large overnight kind. I still need to figure out which brand, as I recall someone telling me that some kinds have a plastic-type top layer which tends to stick and hurt.
I wanted to add the tucks pads the hospital gave me I wish I had asked for additional for the road bc the hospital grade ones are SO much better than the ones you can get at a pharmacy.
My hospital sent me home with peri bottle, tucks pads, dermoplast and a sitz bath.
Everyone's recovery is different but it's best to be prepared so your not caught in a uncomfortable or painful moment and have to send your H out.
-Underwear: How many pairs of granny panties? Are boy shorts good? Do you know where I can find packages of all black? I didn't buy special underwear
-Pads: What kind, and how many? (I never use them for periods, so truly, clueless here) I used Always Infinity but I felt like they gave off an odor, I didn't love them. I bought two boxes and still have a ton left from my last pregnancy
-Peri bottle: Does the hospital give you one, or do I need to buy? They gave me one
-Creams: What creams/lotions/other should I get? Nipple cream
-Medication: Should I have anything on hand? Motrin and Senekot
-Nursing pads: Is this something I should buy in advance? Kind of clueless about them... I bought a shit ton and never used them, but that's just me
-Nursing bras: Should this wait until my milk comes in and I know my size? I bought a couple sleep-type nursing bras ahead of time

-Underwear: I had one package of Hanes and that was enough, but I guess that depends on how often you do laundry.
-Pads: I would buy a pack of Always overnights with wings and a pack of Always Ultrathin (the longer ones).
-Peri bottle: I got one from the hospital.
-Creams: Lanolin cream
-Medication: Prep H cooling gel, tucks pads, colace, and ibuprofen
-Nursing pads: I would buy a pack of Lansinoh disposables, but wait to see if you need them before investing in pricy reusable pads.
-Nursing bras: I picked up two cheap ones to get me through until my milk supply is established and I can get fitted. I have a large chest and cannot go without bras.
-Nursing tanks: I haven't tried that brand myself, but I've heard good things about them. I bought two for now.
-Other: Make sure to stock up on everyday things like toilet paper.
I used nursing tanks from both Bravado and Target. The Bravado ones are definitely nicer and give more support, but also more expensive. The target ones were fine too.
My hospital provided mesh underwear, giant pads for the first few days discharge, ice packs, peri bottle, tuck pads, a sitz bath and dermaplast spray. Ask your hospital what they provide. I highly recommend tucks pads, peri bottle and dermaplast.

A lot will depend on if you have a vaginal or cesarian birth. I had a cesarian and had only moderate amounts of bleeding pp. I bought 2 packs of standard Hanes briefs. I was actually greatfull for the higher waist because they avoided the incision AND provided a little extra support.
I used my normal pads - Always (infinity are great, I don't recall if I used them or just the standard super thin ones) but again, I didn't have super heavy bleeding.
I had a few nursing bras on hand and a few nursing tanks, I just bought them at Target.
Bought a box of washable breast pads, they were fine for around the house, but bulky when going out. I also didn't have a LOT of leakage, so YMMV.
Ditto on the stool softener. I also stocked up on Ibuprofen since I was taking 4 3 or 4 times a day post surgery.
Consider stocking up on snack type foods you can eat with one hand... Granola bars, non drippy fruit, cut up veggies, etc.
-Underwear: How many pairs of granny panties? Are boy shorts good? Do you know where I can find packages of all black? I just used my regular low-rise bikinis from Gap Body once i graduated from the hospital mesh panties
-Pads: What kind, and how many? (I never use them for periods, so truly, clueless here) Giant ones pilfered from the hospital for a couple days, then super maxis. I used 2 packs of these before stepping down to liners. The cottony kind are best - i used 7th Gerenation.
-Peri bottle: Does the hospital give you one, or do I need to buy? Hospital gave me one. I kind of wished they gave me two so I could have them in multiple bathrooms.
-Creams: What creams/lotions/other should I get? something for the nips. I use Earth Mama Angel Baby.
-Medication: Should I have anything on hand? Ibuprofen and stool softener.
-Nursing pads: Is this something I should buy in advance? Kind of clueless about them... I like the Lansinoh brand. You'll probably go thru them quickly so you could try a few diff kinds at first.
-Nursing bras: Should this wait until my milk comes in and I know my size? Buy a couple of comfy sleep bras and wait on real bras.
-Other: What am I forgetting that I'll need at the beginning? I bought a couple of big packs of bottled water from Costco. Bad for the environment but good for me to grab while nursing!
-Underwear: So - this timeframe is usually just 2 weeks that you'll need to be wearing something with pads for bleeding. I dunno how much you need to buy something special maybe just a 5 pack and know you might sacrifice a few maternity undies too. -Pads: Thin, overnight with wings. I'd just get one big pack to start off. bit.ly/1i2SoXN Get a thing of liners too when the pads aren't needed as much.
**NOTE** Nursing makes your uterus contract and you will usually bleed much more while nursing, so it's important to have that pad in place when you sit down to nurse. This will be the case in the hospital before your milk comes in too. -Peri bottle: Mine gave me one. -Creams: Something you like that smells nice, imo. Nothing special.
-Medication: Doc should send you home with prescription pain meds but after that you'll most likely wanna be on an OTC pain killer. Get one you like with a longer timeframe (8 hours as opposed to 4) so you aren't in pain in the middle of the night or constantly coming off your meds and waiting until you can take another.
-Nursing pads: I'd buy a box now and then wait to buy more later so you can see how you like them. Get the ones that are contoured so they don't show through your shirt as obviously. I liked tgt.biz/1nk40bR. These are disposable. I like the washable ones for my sore nipples but they do not have a waterproof backing so you will leak through them if you are a leaker.
-Nursing bras: You can get 1-3 that's a S/M/L now and they will generally be fine. If you get engorged you'll be too big but that's temporary and goes away once you nurse or pump and usually only at the beginning of your milk coming in.
-Other: You need Lanolin tgt.biz/1r8NESW that you put on your nipples after you let them air-dry after every nursing - especially at first. Its a very thick cream but its great for caring for nipples inbetween nursings.
Something that I sent my dh to CVS to buy when I was in the hospital was chapstick. My lips were so chapped when I was in labor. I will definitely bring some with me next time! The hospital gave me a peri bottle, tucks pads, a few pairs of mesh undies, pads, and a numbing spray. I brought my own pads but didn't need them, the hospital ones were much better. I brought a nightgown and new robe to feel more comfortable and I'm glad I did. My hospital room felt cold at times.
Please expound on what you purchased, how many, and any recommendations. Especially 2nd time or recent moms who have done this before.
-Underwear: How many pairs of granny panties? Are boy shorts good? Do you know where I can find packages of all black? I lucked out and found a clearance package of 8 granny panties at Target for about $6. That was perfect for the first week or so. I've been in my usual undies for the past 2 weeks. The hospital gave me a package of the mesh underwear to take home, but they just weren't that comfy, IMO. -Pads: What kind, and how many? (I never use them for periods, so truly, clueless here) I bought the giant, super de dooper overnight Always pads and hated them. The "material" on top is too plasticy and there were some moisture issues. I prefer Stayfree pads. They were more like the pads the hospital gave us. At 3 weeks PP I'm about 1/2 through a 48 ct package, after using the Always and whatever was left over from the hospital. -Peri bottle: Does the hospital give you one, or do I need to buy? Hospital gave us one. -Creams: What creams/lotions/other should I get? Hospital gave me Dermoplast and witch hazel pads for hemmies. I've also purchased polysporin for nursing.
-Medication: Should I have anything on hand? They gave me 2 pain killers and I stopped taking them after a week or two.
-Nursing pads: Is this something I should buy in advance? Kind of clueless about them... I bought the Target brand and have been pretty happy with them. I don't leak that much, but if I skip wearing a nursing pad, well, of course, then I start leaking!
-Nursing bras: Should this wait until my milk comes in and I know my size? Buy something now! I didn't really have anything and then we had to take my son to the pediatrican the day after we left the hospital and I had to rig together some sort of contraption, and my boobs were still flopping around all over the place. I would buy a cheaper bra at Target or Walmart to get through the first few days and then plan to buy better bras down the road.
-Nursing tanks: I was thinking I would pre-buy a few of these. Does that seem ok? Any other recommendations? www.amazon.com/Nursing-Shirt-Black-Size-Small/dp/B003IYYEBQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1398039687&sr=1-1&keywords=nursing+tanks I actually really liked the Leading Lady (something like that) tanks from Walmart of all places. I'm larger (40G) so it's hard to find things that fit nicely. These tanks have elastic that goes all the way around, on the outside of the tank, and that works better for me. I liked the Bravado Basic tanks from Target, too, but they are more expensive. -Other: What am I forgetting that I'll need at the beginning? Someone mentioned Earth Mama Angel Baby nipple butter. I ordered that, based on the board's recommendation, and my pediatrican said absolutely not to use it. While it is all natural and organic, it also contains a lot of known allergens and could be harmful to the baby. She said I could use it on myself if it was going to be a while between feedings, but that I should be really careful if there was any chance the baby would injest that stuff. I was surprised because I had never seen or heard anyone mention this.
Please expound on what you purchased, how many, and any recommendations. Especially 2nd time or recent moms who have done this before.
-Underwear: I would recommend undies with out an elastic band on top. That area was very sensitive and I didn't want anything rubbing near there (I had a c-section). I would say 5-7 pairs. Boy shorts are okay. -Pads: Kotex....I used Always but they gave me a bad rash from prolonged use. My OB said to use Kotex because they are made with cotton. -Peri bottle: Yes, hospital provided this to me. -Creams: Well I use Palmer's Coco Butter for stretch marks and Lush's Charity Pot for all over lotion, and Lanolin for my nipples
-Medication: Advil, gas meds, zantac (if you had HB during pregnancy), colace
-Nursing pads: Yes, I had bamboobies, Avent disposables, and also soothies.
-Nursing tanks: My favorites so far are the ones I got from the Gap. -Other: Belly binder, this thing was awesome - it offered so much support. My hospital gave me one, so you may want to ask your OB if they provide it before you buy one. Breast pump would also be a good idea, at least a manual one to relieve any engorgement. A sleep mask for the hospital - ours made us have a light on at all times when DS was in the room due to mild jaundice.
Please expound on what you purchased, how many, and any recommendations. Especially 2nd time or recent moms who have done this before.
-Underwear: How many pairs of granny panties? Are boy shorts good? Do you know where I can find packages of all black? Don't worry - the hospital will give you mesh undies to help with the pad-holding. Otherwise just make sure you have undies that go up to your belly button in case you have a c/s. I'd havea week's worth of changes. -Pads: What kind, and how many? (I never use them for periods, so truly, clueless here) Always Infiniti overnights (the orange wrapper). You can get a buttload of them on Amazon for cheap, or at Costco. -Peri bottle: Does the hospital give you one, or do I need to buy? The hospital will give you at least one, ask your nurses for a couple more to keep one in each of your bathrooms and in your babybag/purse. -Creams: What creams/lotions/other should I get? For what? I got EarthMama/Angel Baby nipple butter, and some coconut oil for baby's bottom. Desitin is good for bad diaper rash.
-Medication: Should I have anything on hand? Ibuprofen, Colace, and magnesium supplements.
-Nursing pads: Is this something I should buy in advance? Kind of clueless about them... Depends on what you want - disposable or reusable. I have some cotton reusables and I'd get disposables too.
-Nursing bras: Should this wait until my milk comes in and I know my size? Get a couple nursing sleep bras (see Motherhood Maternity for those) to get you by, and then go get fitted a week or two after you deliver for the real deal.
Please expound on what you purchased, how many, and any recommendations. Especially 2nd time or recent moms who have done this before.
-Underwear: How many pairs of granny panties? Are boy shorts good? Do you know where I can find packages of all black? I used the infamous hospital issues mesh underwear for a couple of days after we came home before switching to regular underwear. My boy shorts or granny panties worked out fine, getting them all black wasn't totally necessary b/c I was prepared to pitch them if need be regardless of color. -Pads: What kind, and how many? (I never use them for periods, so truly, clueless here) I was over the giant hospital pads after a couple days at home plus my pp bleeding had gotten a lot better so I switched to Always Infinity. Some people hate them but I loved 'em. Whatever kind you get I'd start with a smaller box in case you hate them then send your H out for more if you like them. -Peri bottle: Does the hospital give you one, or do I need to buy? The hospital gave me one. -Creams: What creams/lotions/other should I get? If you're planning on at least trying to BF, I'd get some type of nipple cream. Medela lanolin worked fine for me, but I know it doesn't for everyone. The hospital gave me a few sample packs, and that got me through until I could send J out for some. And let me tell you, writing out what I needed on a post it note for him to show the salesperson at BRU was hilarious
-Medication: Should I have anything on hand? The hospital sent me home with prescriptions for Motrin and stool softeners. I'd say ask the hospital OB for prescriptions if they don't offer, but if for some reason they don't do that then at least they're things that can be easily picked up.
-Nursing pads: Is this something I should buy in advance? Kind of clueless about them... The hospital sent me home with a couple of boxes, but they're kind of big and bulky so I abandoned them for the Lansinoh ones after a week.
-Nursing bras: Should this wait until my milk comes in and I know my size? Probably. I lucked out though, I got a couple of nursing bras on sale before I had AJ and just went a couple of sizes up from what I was wearing at the time (ex. I was wearing a 34D so I bought 38D). It worked out fine but I know that's not the case for everyone.
-Nursing tanks: I was thinking I would pre-buy a few of these. Does that seem ok? Any other recommendations? www.amazon.com/Nursing-Shirt-Black-Size-Small/dp/B003IYYEBQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1398039687&sr=1-1&keywords=nursing+tanks Am I missing something or do those not have straps? Honestly, I'd get something with straps that buckle (ex. the Gillian O'Malley tanks from Target, not everyone loves them but I thought they did the job ok) or something stretchy enough that you can pull the neckline down under your boob (my ON maternity tanks were great for this, their regular tamis are good too). -Other: What am I forgetting that I'll need at the beginning? See if the hospital provides you a big water jug (like 32oz and up), if not having one at home is a good idea. Otherwise, don't worry...if you realize you forgot something you can always send your H or someone else out to get it for you. You should have seen the list I sent J to BRU with the day after we brought AJ home...and the list I texted my parents so they could pick stuff up on their way over the day after that
