Fake with trinkets, candy, or coins in them. Sometimes they would have a slip of paper in them for a larger 'prize.' We rarely had eggs of any kind in our baskets, just other candy and sometimes toys/cds/etc. depending on age.

Real.
We only did fake at my grandparents. One year, my parents told my cousin there was an egg hidden with a $50 bill in it. They lied. He looked for over an hour.

Always fake. My brother and I always rehid them for each other after the initial hunt and good thing they were fake because my mom would always stumble upon one we missed a few months later.

When I was a kid, we'd hunt for the real ones that we'd dyed. When I had kids of my own, I'd hide plastic ones because I always hated dying them. When DS was in grade school, K or 1st grade, his class had an Easter party. I didn't realize that they'd colored real eggs until a few weeks later, when the smell coming from his backpack became hard to ignore.

We hunt for the plastic eggs with chocolates inside. We hunted for the plastic ones when I was a kid too.
Something about hiding an actual hard-boiled egg makes me nervous. If I ever hid real eggs I know I'd forget and there would be an egg rotting somewhere.
We always hunted for fake eggs. I didn't realize people actually hunted for real eggs. How many eggs does one person eat? Seems like a waste of good eggs, of a really short egg hunt. Plus, hunting for candy is WAY more fun than a hard boiled egg.
We dyed real blown-out eggs but we didn't hunt for those ones because they're delicate. They were for decoration only, and we still have the eggs that I dyed when I was a little girl, almost 30 years ago.
Egg salad, deviled eggs, hard boiled eggs, so many options!
We had a golden egg that had candy in it.
I loved hunting for the eggs I dyed...I'd mark them so I knew when I got one of my eggs.
