I have a loft-style studio apartment, and I am trying to decide what to put in a nook I have.
A desk (some storage, place to file important documents, sort mail, corral paper clutter, I might work there occasionally, but more often at home I work from the couch, and I'd like to take up sewing, and that would be a place to set up the machine.)
Or,
A Buffet/sideboard (Much more storage - I need storage, the nook is right next to my dining area, so it would make more visual sense, could set the top up as a bar)
I really can't decide what would be a better use of the space. It really is an either/or - there isn't space to put a desk or sideboard elsewhere.
pics? If you are thinking of taking up sewing I can tell you now it's a messy habit. I'm just getting into it and I have fabric and sewing supplies everywhere so I would lean towards a good storage system for that.
What about a third option - a hutch or something nice and tall? It sounds like you need storage multi-purpose functionality and maybe an open top to place a sewing machine. So I'd pick something that is like your pictured buffet that has a flat surface on top but with tons of upper shelves. You could use the top for decorative "bar stuff" or serving pieces and the bottom to hold papers, files, sewing materials, etc.
I'm kind of leaning toward storage, too. But I do have clutter issues, and I feel like a desk with a filing cabinet would be helpful, and it's more socially acceptable to have a stack of mail and papers on a desk rather than a sideboard. Lol - designing my life around my messy habits.
As you can see, it's pretty close to the dining area (I don't have a table yet. I have my eye on a white tulip table and will add other pops of color so the chairs don't look so ridiculous):
