I have no idea what color to paint our new home. I just know that I really dislike the current colors. I prefer grays and neutrals but the trim is throwing me off. The trim will not be painted any time soon. The lighter color extends throughout the entire house and the brown is used as an accent. Any ideas? (This is not our furniture, I still need to figure that out too!)
I like natural wood trim so I would not paint it either. I generally find an inspiration piece for each room and build our color scheme around that. I have used art work, rugs, decorative pillows, bedding, a marble chess set and a signed baseball card as the inspiration piece for a room. Just use something you love that you plan to put in the living room. Ivories, whites, and deep browns would work with that trim color.

It looks like your carpet is already a more gray neutral, so I think you could paint the walls no problem. A light gray with blue undertones would look great IMO. A lot of people have used sherwin Williams Sea salt. It's a beautiful color.

Thank you for the ideas! I like the idea of finding an inspiration piece and going from there. I think I am getting overwhelmed by thinking I need to have everything figured out right away.

I think the instant gratification society we live in really puts that pressure to have all things perfect right away. It is okay to take as long as you need to figure it all out...Rome wasn't built in a day.
I know people who can decide on colors, paint and decorate a room or a whole house in a week, but I am not one of them. I wish that I was a little bit more like that, but I like the process, and watching it come together over time. I have to see how we really live in the space (not the idealized fantasy version of us-lol) and kind of let the space show me the way, rather than me forcing it into my fantasy. I also don't like to spend money on mistakes, so I am willing to wait for just the right vision for the space to present itself. Some of my speedy decision making friends have wound up being in a rush to finish, then find that the color wasn't right or their other choices don't work, and then have to redo it all or live with something they don't like.
