We're flying into MIA for 8 days and considering the Fl Keys. It seems like there is a lot we could do: Bahia Honda state park, a trip to the Dry Tortugas, Hemingways cats, time in the hotel pool, etc. However, every time I mention it to someone I hear, "I wouldn't take the kids to the Keys."
I mean, I wouldn't take them to do the Duval crawl, lol but other than that, I can't think of any reason that it wouldn't be a family friendly trip. You'll have a great time!

Take them! It is a cool drive drown, lots of bridges and islands. The beaches are nice, and Bahia Honda & Pennekamp are neat places. In Key West there's lots of touristy stuff to do, and lots of little shops & restaurants, and they will like the southernmost point location!. As long as you're all the way down in Miami, I would keep going!
Awesome, thanks! You guys are saying what I thought, but I've gotten such a negative response from anyone I mentioned it to that I thought I was missing something.

I know Duval Street has a reputation and sure, some of it is true. However, it also has a ton of great shops and restaurants. As long as you aren't bar crawling with the kids at midnight, you'll be fine!

I think people are probably focused on Duval Street as someone else said. It's like saying you're going to New Orleans and people just thinking of Bourbon St. I went there a lot when I was a kid - years and years ago, but I would have no issue taking my own kids today.
I've taken DD twice- at age 11 months and at just shy of age 3. Are the people who are telling you no just big partiers? Cause my party-going self hasn't been so active for over a decade, so I don't go to the Keys with the idea to get smashed and sleep all day.
