I would not park in a residential neighborhood to avoid paying for parking. When I lived in apartments right by campus, people would always try to park in front of where I lived to avoid paying for event parking. I thought it was very inconsiderate.
The only time I will walk farther to not have to pay for parking would be if it was more than $10.

I have to walk 16 blocks to work to avoid paying. (Working near the university AND hospital blows). Given it's $1 per half hour so every single work day would be $17. I could get on a waiting list for a parkade spot but that is about 2 years long, still costs hundreds per month and still is a 8 minute walk. Sad face.
I avoid paying for parking when I can by going to the malls that are not downtown. I hate paying for parking!!
My husband will drive around the block for several hours looking for on-street parking. He has to move the car several times a week for street cleaning -- usually it is a 20-minute deal, but sometimes it takes a LONG time.
Since we don't want to spend $600+ a month for parking (particularly because the car probably isn't worth $600), that's our option.
That said, I think he's crazy for insisting that we keep the car.
This seems like a lot of work for a car that (it sounds like) doesn't get used much.
Yup! It is so stupid. He uses it maybe once every other week to play hockey on Long Island (note: there are teams he could join that would not require driving) and we use it maybe once every other month to visit family or for some sort of day trip. It is ridiculous.
