Hi. I'm in a wedding in a few weeks. I ordered a maternity dress (as I'll be almost 29 weeks) and when ordering (back in January) I had no idea how big I'd get. So I ordered a dress 2 sizes too big. That ended up not being the best idea, as it's still huge on me. So, the tailor needs to hem the dress, take the dress in everywhere and move the straps. She quoted me $162! Ah! I'm wondering if that's reasonable, or if I'm being ripped off.
Here is the dress:
I live in Southern California, so I imagine COL has some effect on this kind of thing. And I know it's a lot of work that needs to be done. But I'm wondering if I'm being overcharged. There's not much I can do at this point, because I already dropped it off/paid. I'm just curious.
I can't see your pic... does it have alot of beading or lace?
My wedding dress is being altered and I'm going to end up paying around $500 for it. But I live in SF- so I expected it to be pricey. And my dress has beading and lace.
I've had a BM dress altered in the past and it ran me about $140-150 but again, the bodice was beaded and had ribbing in it since it was a corseted top so I guess I wasn't surprised.

I am guessing that they are going to have to move the entire zipper, remove fabric, then reconstruct. So I am thinking that is a fair price unfortunately. Although, captainmel is probably the one to ask.

Ok. I'm glad to hear I'm not being overcharged. And kris356 I think she does have to move the zipper. It's really big on me.
I'm definitely not happy it is costing so much. But I am happy to hear I'm not being ripped off. This is probably the last wedding I'll be in for awhile, so that's good news.

they're basically making you a new dress out of the old one since they're having to take it in so much. so yeah, that sounds about right, especially for chiffon.

I'll check in since I got called over. I think it seems pretty reasonable for what you're getting done. Chiffon is gorgeous but it is kind of a PITA to sew. Also, depending on how much they're taking in I would say it makes more sense to have it come out of the sides and not the zipper. (This is just my opinion without seeing you or the dress IRL)
Also, it sucks to pay to take in but that dress probably has French seams which means it couldn't be let out at all. It was worth it to get sized down.
I'm going to check my tailor's prices next time I'm in. The last time I had a bridesmaid dress taken in and hemmed, was when I was living near Boston and it cost me $60. The dress was also about 2 sizes to big. Granted this was a few years ago and the dress was satin, but still.
I guess if others think it's a fair price, then it probably is, but it's making me grateful for the prices my tailor charges.

Are you due for a yelling? Or did you get the paper done?

HAHAHAHA I got one paper done and the other 75% done, but yeah I shouldn't be on here!! This is much more fun!

I had a dress that needed significant alterations since a shop ordered me the wrong size dress and refused to alter or order me the correct size. The dress was $120. The alterations were $150 and this was 10 years ago in a LCOL area. It was also a chiffon dress and only one tailor would touch that large of a job. It involved no lace or embellishments at all. Another factor with tailoring chiffon is that the fabric requires a full lining which means that they are reconstructing 2 complete dresses in this case making it a larger than normal job.

Tailoring prices in Boston have gone up a lot recently because tailors/seamstresses are hard to find. $162 for those alterations to a chiffon dress would not be unreasonable around here now. Chiffon is a difficult to work so prices go up for chiffon dress alterations.
Now you've got me thinking. She did like me a lot and brought me a gift when she came back from her vacation. So it's definitely possible she gave me a discounted rate.
