tulips: Plastic things are perfect to buy used. Odds are X won't remember nursing. DS obviously does remember nursing (we just weaned this week) and he's fine with the fact that his sister can nurse and he can't.
How do I get my 18 month old to not whine and fuss the whole time he is in the car? I give him a paci, toys, snacks, play his favorite music, nothing works longer than two minutes. It is driving me crazy and I am tempted to turn his seat around to see if it helps (though I won't I'm sure). We have a 35 min commute each way and after the first ten he just wants out. Sigh.
The whole "sleep with your kid's lovey so that it smells like you" thing - do you just do that the first time, or every time you wash / exchange for an alternate?
When starting solids- if the baby is hungry, do you offer the boob first? I'm guessing yes and just do solids at certain times during the day (like for lunch or whenever H and I eat)?
The slacker solids method is to offer the baby solids at your meal times and the boob when ever they're hungry. More ambitious/Type A parents remember to offer these solids every day, eventually multiple times. I'm more of a "ah well, baby's sleeping, try again next time" method person.
How long did it take you and LO to get used to being worn? I've put J in the moby twice today, so far each attempt I've put it on better and he's getting used to being in it. He's actually asleep in it right now.

i just offer solids in between L's main meal times. i don't have set times that i do solids, mostly just when im bored.
Besides a snot sucker and a humidifier, how can I make my 3.5 month with a cold more comfortable? She sounds miserable.
Saline nose spray. Elevate one side of her crib mattress or have her sleep in a RnP if you have one.
Also hanging out in the bathroom with the hot shower running was helpful. We also ran a humidifier at night when he was sick with his first cold at about 3 months.
DS has all sorts of black crud under his fingernails. It doesn't go away when we clip them, and I can't seem to get it with a washcloth. Is this just a lost cause that I should resign myself to living with until he's older?

It's probably a phase that will hopefully end soon! Do you have a mirror so you can him and my dd likes seeing herself and can now see me. Try a mini magna doodle- my dd loves it!
If you BF and had a new baby soon after you weaned, did your older child remember nursing and want to nurse? X will be weaned before he's 1 it's looking like. He'll be 15 months when the new baby comes. H asked me if X will remember nursing and want to do it again. I assume no since he's young, but I really have no idea.
I have no firsthand experience with this, exactly, but I would think no. Out of curiosity I tried latching C a week or two after weaning and he was all WTF is this. And he was older, 17 months.

I didn't replace solids for a nursing session. I still nursed her when she normally would nurse, and offered solids in the middle. For example, when she started solids, she was still nursing every 2 hours. So, I fed her some baby oatmeal an hour after she last nursed. I still nursed her an hour later.
I don't offer her solids when I eat. It wouldn't work for us because I feed her (not BLW yet) and she gets bored if I'm not feeding/engaging her. She also would be distracted by whatever else I'm doing.
Now, at 6 months (we started solids around 4.5 months), she is eating 2 "meals" a day and nursing every 3-4 hours. I usually give her her 2nd meal around 4:00.
But, I SAH am flexible with her routine, so it works for us.

I did it every time I washed it for a few weeks until she finally seemed attached. I started at about 6 months though and I would put BM on it too, so it got washed a lot.

There was a period of time with DD that I literally had to sing the whole way home if I didn't want her to cry. Playing a CD or the radio did not work - it had to be actual singing. We have a 25 minute drive home so I ended up hoarse every night but it was worth it not to be distracted by the crying. I sang a lot of songs that you can make go on and on (like old macdonald with every single animal I could think of). Now she sings to herself in the car lol).

We offered the boob first until 12 months and then reversed. We would start new solids on weekend mornings (both work ft) and then once we were sure she would tolerate something okay, we would give it to her after daycare at dinnertime. Eventually we'd send solids into daycare and they would offer them once or twice after bottles but I started at home first to make sure she was really ready.
tulips, we had a 6 month gap between weaning and new baby (weaned at 14mo, DD born at 20 months) but DS did not remember nursing. He did express interest once, but I just said that nursing is for babies and he's a big boy and can drink his milk from a cup like mama and papa. He was totally fine with that. He had no problem weaning, and I'm sure that helped. I just stopped offering and he didn't ask.
Other than talking to him, cuddling him, and just generally loving on him, is there something else I should be doing with my 1 week old when he's awake?

I usually talk to him, try to get him to say new words, colors, numbers and sing songs to/with him. He can be a big crab after daycare, especially if they were playing outside and now he has to get in the car. Can you keep special toys in the car so that they are new & interesting and for the car only?

DD will be 7 months next week. Would you offer puffs at this age? I don't know why I am freaking out over giving her puffs. I gave her a mum-mum the other day and she did gag a bit, but I felt better about the mum-mum because it's much bigger and she couldn't fit the whole thing in her mouth.
I also use the mesh feeders for bananas and avocados. I know plenty of people do BLW at this age but the idea of table foods still freaks me out but I know she'll get table foods at some point. I'm pretty much going to be serving DD purees until she starts college, right?
Stupid question: we plan to use the rnp for nighttimes initially. Do I strap her in? Or is that for when they're more mobile?
We don't strap E in. She hates swaddling so we don't do that either. She's just in there in a sleep sack. Once she can move around on her own more freely we'll buckle her in.

On the bottle, it says the baby should be crawling with her belly off the floor. Is your DD doing that? If not, I'd wait.
I feed DD small chunks of really steamed sweet potato and butternut squash. She eats it off my finger and likes it. It took her a minute to figure out the different texture. Maybe you could try that? I'm also hesitant to just give her a stick of sweet potato to feed herself, but this is working for us right now. She's also not really interested in feeding herself yet.

It never works for us! I slept with that thing for a week, she still rejected it.

I haven't read the instructions yet but she is not mobile at all yet (beyond lots of rolling), let alone crawling with her belly off the floor! That makes me feel better about waiting then. Thanks!
DD does love to feed herself from the mesh feeder and from pouches.

We started feeding DS puffs at about 6 months and he LOVED gumming them. Now at 7.5 months, he can pick them up himself and he still likes them ok.
Puffs dissolve pretty quickly, so I've found that even if he gags a little, he can easily slobber it up and swallow it- no actual choking.

I think we gave Cheerios at 7.5 or 8 months and puffs are softer, right? I would go for it. We never used the mesh feeders so I have no idea on when you should ditch them.
