Besides the eggs and meat (for those that will butcher them), they are a natural pest control. They eat a lot of bugs and will also go after snakes/lizards. It doesn't work as well when they aren't free-range though.
Ooh. Now this I could get behind.
But then I would know my chicken tenders were built from cockroach nutrients...
Eggs are even grosser to me than yogurt, and that's saying something.
Yeah, they are creepy. Unless they are in fried rice or pad thai, Asian food negates egg grossness for me somehow.
I still think keeping chickens could be kind of fun. I'd rather have goats though so I could make some delicious cheese. Realistically I will never own livestock though.
I've told my H that as soon as our city changes their codes regarding keeping farm animals (if ever), I'm getting a few. I have always loved chickens. They can have such great personalities. Plus, we eat a ton of eggs, so they'd be useful too.

Right, but they also wouldn't be pumped full of the nasty stuff most of them are.
My family raises chickens in the yard, for the eggs, pest control, and fertilizer.
We are contemplating getting chickens for pest control, more so, tick control. Not only are chickens an easy animal to keep, but their personalities are pretty great. They follow you when you walk around, the can claim you as their bff and they are just all around friendly.

And then you chop their head off and make chicken salad sandwiches.
What I don't know won't hurt me. In my head the chicken at the store, did NOT come from a real animal, and there were no messes. #delusionsiknowbuttheykeepmehappy

Check into guinea fowl if you just want them for the pest control.

Guinea are obnoxious.
We would also use the eggs and build movable cages for in the garden.
I don't like eggs and I hate birds. They freak me out. This accurately represents my feelings about birds
DH wanted chickens, hahahaha no.
We are soul sisters. I'm afraid of birds, and HATE eggs
I lived in a guesthouse on a farm and hordes of geese stopped by on their migration path. I ran out in my bathrobe with a broom and chased them away. I looked insane but they remembered and didn't stop the next two years. ::shudder::
I could not sleep at night with geese outside my window.
