It was crawling on DH. I think Sheldon brought it in after our walk. He's due for his flea and tick treatment on Monday, and we didn't find any others on him.

Don't freak out cbwm1. I find them crawling on Tucker all the time in the summer even with his preventative. Maybe only 2 or 3 a summer are biting him. We keep him cut really short in the summer partly because of ticks. When he is fluffier they tend to crawl on him more and it also makes them harder to find.
I find ticks all the time on my dog and sometimes on myself or DH. My understanding has always been that deer ticks are REALLY tiny- like hard to see. We find bigger ticks that aren't a concern, even if they are attached and engorged.

The smallest ticks do not transmit disease, but once they reach the nymph and bigger stage they can. Bigger adult deer ticks (smaller than dog ticks) can transmit it too.

Thanks for clarifying. I'm not sure if I've ever seen a deer tick. But we have dog ticks all the time. Off to Google the size difference...
As I had mentioned in the thread yesterday, deer ticks are also called black legged ticks in some places like VA where I live. Those are the ticks that carry lyme. They are easy to see because their body is brown and their legs are black. If they have been attached and have blood in the them, the tick's rear end will start to turn reddish color. Just something to take note of if you pull a tick off you next time.

I would not stress over this. I pull a few ticks off of my dog each year that are engorged. She does have they Lyme fax and gets flea/tick stuff, but such is life with a dog. I do what I can, but she likes to run and roll outside and there are ticks in this area.
