Spanish/want to sound fancy: oo-roo-GW-EYE (haha I don't know how to write it so that you're saying guay rhyming with "eye" and not "gay")
Great, so I'm neither English nor fancy. I've generally leaned toward "neither" with the pronunciation being YOO-ru-gw.eye so rather a mishmash of all the worst.

Haha don't worry, WOT?*. I think combos of those two are fine as well (although I'd put the accent on YUR in your pronunciation) plus really, if your biggest flaw is saying the name of a small, generally irrelevant* country wrong, then you're probably doing ok.
*I would like to make it clear that despite this irrelevance in terms of world matters, I love Uruguay and its delicious beef and its friendly people

I had to do an ETA because once I tried pronouncing it several more times it seemed like I was leaning more toward emphasizing the first syllable. So it would be closer to YOU-ruh-gweye, I suppose.

Would you recommend visiting? We are trying to plan a couple weeks in South America with our toddler. Since H will be coming from Southern Brazil about twenty minutes north of the Uruguayan border so two of the ideas we have are driving around the north or meeting up in Montevideo.

A lot of people combine Montevideo and/or Colonia with time in Buenos Aires. You could meet in Montevideo (2 days), then bus to Colonia (2 days) and take the Buquebus ferry from there to BA. I'm happy to offer other suggestions too, just not sure exactly what areas you're open to, what time of year you're going, what you like to do, etc.
TBH, everything is pretty open. H is in southern Brazil multiple times a year for work. The kid and I were going to join him at some point and do something. Very precise, I know. I was thinking I'd figure out where we wanted to go and what we wanted to do first and then figure out what general time of year was best based upon that.

Cicero in that case, and assuming you want to stay relatively close to southern Brazil, I would look at options of either doing Uruguay beach towns down to Montevideo (in summer, obviously), beach time in Florianopolis, Brazil (again, summer) or a Montevideo/Colonia/BA city-focused trip which could be any time of year.
