All of the following information comes from Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates:
Suspect James Holmes, 24, of Aurora, had one traffic summons for speeding in 2011. Other than that, he had no prior criminal record.
Within one hour of the shooting early Friday morning, there were approximately 25 officers on the scene who apprehended Holmes.
There were eventually approximately 200 officers on the scene several hours later.
Holmes was apprehended with three weapons: one was left inside the crime scene. On his person, Holmes had an AR-15 assault rifle, a Remington 870 12-gauge shotgun and a 40-caliber Glock handgun. He had another 40-caliber Glock handgun in his car.
The police have no capability of estimating the amount of shots fired. There were “many, many shots fired.”
71 people were shot — 12 are deceased. Two died at area hospitals, 10 died at the scene
We are not looking for any other suspects, “we are confident that Holmes acted alone.’
Some rounds penetrated into an adjoining theater — at least one person was struck by a bullet in the adjoining theater
The suspect was dressed in all black, ballistic attire that included throat, hand and leg covering as well as head and chest protection.
Anyone with additional information is being encourage to call a tip line at 303-739-1862. For those who feel traumatized, you can call a help line at 303-617-2300.
The crime scene is large, and includes some cars in the parking lot. The police are working to get those cars released, but “we will be (at the crime scene) for some time.”
Holmes’ Paris Street apartment is booby-trapped with trip wire, incendiary devices and chemical devises. Five buildings in the area have been evacuated.
There were four showings of “The Dark Knight Rises” at the theater. All were sold out. Police interviewed close to 200 witnesses.
Police are analyzing all social media — there are a lot of fake reports. Someone called a national media station and said he was Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates.
Police were on scene within a minute to a minute and a half of the first call and apprehended Holmes at that point.

“We’re not going to get into why (Holmes) did what he did. We don’t have that information,” Oates said.
“There is pretty significant evidence he used the assault rifle, shotgun and handgun in the theater,” Oates aid.
Oates said that he used to work for the NYPD, but he would not comment on the NYPD report that Holmes was dressed as the Joker from the Batman franchise. “He was dressed as I described,” Oates said.

WhoTF??
Idiots looking for a thrill.
In the same link, the guy who posted the video from the theater posted an apology.
I think I missed something. Can someone explain why there's an NYPD report (or rumors of such report)? Why would the NYPD have information about this or have written a report?
I'm glad he was arrested. Too many of these motherfuckers turn the gun on themselves or are taken out by police.
I asked about this in the other thread. He gave in so easily it seemed. When they arrested him he still had 3 guns on him. It dosen't appear he opened fire on the police. What was going on his brain?
Maybe he does have a story to tell, but with his mother "not being suprised" how fucked up is his story?

I really just want to know the "why." It will never make sense even if he does give a full confession explaining his actions but still, what motivated him to do this?

Hmmm. I love me a tin foil hat, but could he have known this going into it?
The shooter? Sure, why not? Observe patterns. A friend who has connections. If USA crime dramas have taught me anything it's that there are a dozen ways Holmes could have known there wouldn't be an officer there that night.
I am listening to the Radioi and they are still bringing up the "Joker" thing. Even more they are saying that it was a ploy to get the police over to his rigged apartment, like in the last batman movie. The joker was caught and sent them somwhere where explosives went off. Weird connection to think this all has to do with the actual movie.

Because if he approached the police with a gun, they would have shot him. He wanted to live. The guy was a PhD student. SMH. Those poor families.

I mean this in the most non-accusatory way possible because I'm not saying this to play the blame game...but I'm curious as to why they didn't have any last night? You would think that on a big premiere night like that, they would have officers there?
Or were there actual uniforms there last night, so they didn't need off-duty officers?

I read his neighbor had called the cops because there was loud music.coming from the apt.(like a party) but got suspicious when she didn't hear normal party noise.

DH said they are probably there on Fri/Sat nights.

Even if they were there, how could they have prevented this? It seems like it all happened very fast.
Horrifying, I'm really glad he warned the police about his apartment.
But...why? Dude clearly didn't value the lives of anyone in the theater, why would he spare the lives of anyone going into his apartment?
I don't think he warned police with specifics like "My apt is rigged up with trip wires to blow you sky high". I got the impression he let the police know that he had more weapons and such at his apt, expecting the to walk right into his trap.
The neighbors below him in the apt building had an interesting story. They said they never heard a word from this guy but exactly at midnight last night, techno music started blaring from his apt and kept playing for one hour before it went off. They called the cops - quite possibly this was his other way of luring victims to his apt. I also wonder if it it was to make sure investigtors found his apt and learned his story, just in case he didn't live through it.
