My industry is pretty small. There are a few jobs I'm interested in, but I'm terrified that if it gets back to my boss I've applied he'll fire me (he can and he will). Let's just say that while one is not a direct competitor it's like a Hatfield/McCoy type hatred going on. I've see online you could write "company name withheld" but would a hiring manager look down on that?
Resumes and job applications should be confidential, until you have given them permission to contact your current employer.
I sent me resume who turned out to be friends with my editor. The guy asked about me before I had an interview. Thankfully it wasn't a big shock I was applying.
I got an interview but turned him down. If he risked my job, I don't want to work for him.
This is tricky, because even though resumes are confidential people still talk. I would just try to ensure I mentioned it in an initial interview that my current job does not know I am leaving and I would like to keep it confidential.
ETA: I agree with the PP's that if someone breaks the confidence, you probably don't want to work for them.
What about maybe putting it in the cover letter that I'd prefer it be confidential up until the point an offer is made?
My biggest fear is that I won't even get to the interview step but it'll still get back to my boss I'm looking. At one of his "enemies". Or even one of his "friends" in the industry, I've found one there too I'd like to apply for.
If I got a "company name withheld" resume, I'd google the person's name and any other identifying info to try to figure it out.
In other words, if you have a LinkedIn profile or any other public association with your work, withholding the name on the resume isn't going to do any good.
If this is really a Hatfield and McCoy kind of relationship, I don't see what interest the other side has in screwing you over. If you are a great candidate, they'll want to hire you. If not, they aren't going to want you to lose your job, since that will mean their good candidates might apply to fill your shoes.

A potential employer called myH current employer without his consent / knowledge before he was offered anything. The bosses were friends. Awkward.
How did that work out? I actually found another position I'm interested in from a "friendly" business acquaintance of ours, but I'm still scared of somehow it getting back to my boss. I'm trying to come up with things to say to him if that's the case that are better than "I feel like I'm being screwed over here" or "you're 74, you could retire or die any day and no one knows what's going to happen to this place".
