DH gets one of his awesome free trips again this winter. We actually had to cancel our summer trip since we would have a newborn (who is now 2 weeks old and adorable!)
We will likely have to take the kiddos on this one, which is new for us. However, we can also take a set of parents to help.
We have narrowed it down to either Costa Rica, the Big Island or Mexico. We fly from Toronto, so I am tempted to do Costa Rica because it is the same time zone (or only an hour difference maybe?) and 6 hours flight tops, direct. The Big Island requires at least 1, possibly 2 stopovers and would be a 5-6 hour difference. We have been to Kauai, Maui and Oahu already and have ALWAYS wanted to do the Big Island but I think with kids its a no-go. We have been to Mexico several times so I'm totally comfortable taking the kids there. I think the resort for that one is the Grand Velas Mayan Riviera.
I am leaning towards Costa Rica. Any reason I don't want to take kids there??

We have taken the kids wherever we wanted to go. When they were 3y and 3m old we went to Italy bc I had a conference there. We have taken them to Kauai before (but we are in the PacNW). I would totally take the kids to Costa Rica. Why not? They will have a great time wherever you go.
Where would you stay at on the Big Island? If you get the Four Seasons there (I know you got the FS in Maui, right?) then I would do that because you never need to leave.
And where in Costa Rica would you go? Would you move around the country or just stay in one location? I loved Costa Rica but I'm not sure I'd want to go there with an infant.
Also welcome back! How's the house build going? We break ground in about 2 weeks and I am soooo excited.
I should send you my house plans!! Let me figure out how to upload them. We broke ground a few weeks ago.
So the big island should be a four seasons - let me check. I have a bad feeling it wasn't though because I commented on that. We would pick the BI in a heartbeat if it didn't mean 12 hours on a plane with small kids.
We typically don't travel with our kid (and now kids!) so this is new to us
Pick whichever location where you can stay in one place and base all your travel out of there. I nixed Costa Rica in December with my 8 month old because there was too much to see and it's all too far apart. Plus I'd have wanted to do Tikal and the Guatemalan jungle with a not fully vaccinated baby seemed like a bad idea. YMMV.
Hmmm good point about vaccines. I will have to see what would be recommended, the 6-month old definitely won't be fully vaxxed.

is your 2.5 yr old interested in shows/movies on an iPad? I forget when my kids started to care about that. If so don't let a long flight scare you because it was WAY easier than I imagined it would be. My kids just watched their shows and slept. You can get kids meals, at least on delta, so it was easy to feed them. I was pleasantly shocked at how much better it was than I imagined.
The time change was an awful bitch though, I won't lie about that.
I would go to Hawaii because of the vaccinations. If you bring grandparents, you should still be able to enjoy yourselves because the island isn't big and there's something for everyone. In CR I'd think the things I wanted to visit are too spread out.
I wouldn't step foot in Mexico, even without a baby. I've had bad run-ins with people in Mexico on more than one trip, including being pulled over and robbed by a cop. I HATE Mexico.
