When H gets older and is in all the school plays and dance recitals, you'll learn the magic of safety pins. I can't even count the number of times my dance costume was safety pinned together at the last minute so I could still compete even though something broke/ripped/was slightly outgrown. So...I always have at least a few around somewhere.

If you really don't have a safety pin, you could try taping the end of the string to make it stiff and compact, like the end of a shoelace. Same concept.
