When I make purees for our reusable pouches, I put in the whole fruit/veg and puree it in the water I cook it in, so I'll feel even better on the days he gets those, I guess?
FFS. The article just points out that it's mostly sugary juice. How is this a newsflash? And this is not an attack on every parent that's ever used a pouch. Even the article itself says that as part of a balanced diet it's fine, and much better than candy snacks on the go. What is wrong with pointing out that fresh fruit IS better? And that chewing and eating slowly is better than sucking down a pouch with no effort and still being hungry?
I'm too cheap for pouches. DS tried one once when I was frustrated with his veggie intake and I was hoping for a magic solution to get SOMETHING into him, but he knew. He'll eat fruit all day long, but if you mix that fruit with anything green and it's a no-go.
For those trying to get more veggies into their kids' diet - try mixing pureed veggies into pasta sauce. It's pretty easy to cover it up without added sugar. Also, Barilla makes pastas made with veggies are also awesome. I know it's not a significant amount of anything in them, but I do hope it's better than just the normal whole grain pasta we used to buy.

I randomly had 2 adults tell me just last week they that eat pouches regularly. One even buys them as part of her hurricane supplies. brilliant!

One of the grad students in my H's lab regularly eats pouches as snacks. I guess it's not really that different to my afternoon smoothie snack, though I think it's a little wacky.
DD eats pouches sometimes, usually just when we are out and she needs a snack. We sometimes bring little tupperwares full of cut pieces of fruit, but applesauce pouches hold up better if we're going out long. I've been trying to get her used to eating them because we have a 14 hour flight coming up and you better believe she'll be having baby food pouches on that plane rather than me dealing with a spoon and jars of baby food.
We consider them a snack or supplement if all food is rejected. However, they truly are the only way she will consume any vegetable so I'm happy she eats them so willingly.
Also, I'm lol'ing at people getting called defensive over pouches. This is why we can never actually have discussions on our discussion board - because people immediately get called defensive or overly-sensitive for expressing opinions. DON'T MAKE ME TAKE MY POUCHES AND GO HOME!

About 4 years ago an executive at Sunny Delight gave a talk to a class I was in. Per him, a lot of people see SD as a healthy choice for kids between juice and soda. Nevermind most people reading slate see juice as unhealthy.
That's true. I've certainly known people who think that what makes soda unhealthy is the carbonation. I actually had a coworker who would snottily proclaim that she doesn't drink carbonated beverages because they're "so bad for your bones," generally while I was drinking a Talking Rain sparkling water, but she'd drink a daily bottle of Vitamin Water. ^o)

I like the Happy Tot ones I buy for E. I try to choose ones with <10 grams of sugar per pouch (the 4.22-oz. size), but with some protein and fiber, so most of the time I buy the sweet potato, apple, carrot, and cinnamon kind with chia seeds. They're not too sweet and are quite filling!
I will say I would prefer that E not get a pouch every single day, but H is the one who gets him up and ready in the mornings, and their routine includes a pouch first thing (E gets breakfast after he gets to daycare, but is hangry pretty much immediately upon waking up). I know that otherwise he is being fed nutritious foods, so some fancy applesauce first thing in the morning is OK with me.

I didn't read the article. I'm still annoyed DD refused pouches. I thought they would be so great for travel! DD was basically like, "WTF, mom, this is baby food." ::side eye:: ::pushes pouch away:: "go away with this nonsense."
I'd love to know how many people are actually feeding their kid pouches multiple times a day. That shit is expensive. I know it's convenient, but I don't know anyone IRL that gives them even once a day. They're more for convenience purposes.
We're at least once a day. Usually two - an applesauce in the morning to keep her from melting down before breakfast at daycare and a vegetable pouch with dinner.
Us too... Go ahead and hand me the MOTY award. He gets oatmeal/fresh fruit for regular breakfast, but it is like an hour and a half after he gets there. Lunch he gets left overs, more fruit (sometimes a pouch) and dinner is usually some paired down version of what we are eating + veggie pouch.
You wouldn't believe how many horror stories I and my colleagues have from the days we cover feeding clinic that are pouch related. It's always the extreme, where that's all the kid eats and the parent wonders why they 1. don't chew ANY food (because they don't have to and thus never learned), 2. have hot mess teeth (hello sugar), and/or 3. aren't gaining any weight (despite all the sugar, the overall calorie content isn't high enough to sustain a normal growth curve). It blows my mind how many people think fruits and vegetables=good for you no matter what, and don't bother to read the ingredient list or think that eating nothing but one thing every meal is a problem.
And in the event anyone is thinking about getting overly defensive about this...I AM NOT SAYING POUCHES ARE THE ENEMY. My kid gets them a couple times a week when he needs entertainment at grandma and grandma's, but his cheap mom makes him eat his regular food the rest of the time so she doesn't have to remember to buy them all the time. As he gets older that could change and I could end up relying on pouches more, and that's okay. The stuff I was describing above is JUST THE EXTREME. And not a condemnation of pouches. Just putting that out there because I've been hanging out here just long enough to know how these threads can go. (Goldfish thread, anyone? Or the book thread from a few weeks ago?)

I ate pouches all the time when I was pregnant. Morning sickness. Boo. So DD probably had more pouches in utero than she does now, but she still gets them. And I occasionally grab one for me. Sometimes two tablespoons of food is all I need for an afternoon snack.

There was a lady on my local FB Group that said she gives her kid like 8 a day. I was def side eyeing that one!!!
Now that's insane. Who the heck can afford that?! I'd be side-eyeing that as well.

I didn't start giving pouches until H was about nine to ten months, and they are super handy. I would never let them be his primary source of fruit and veg, but they have some nutrients and are better than some other snack options out there.
But especially when traveling, they are amazing!
He can go months without one and then have five in a week. It depends on a lot of factors.

Some one should call CPS on me. Nods had an applesauce pouch AND a juice box at lunch.
But for us they are a treat and she only gets them when we are out somewhere. Since she doesn't get gluten and only had limited dairy the kid needs some treats.

My kids sometimes get a fruit pouch for a snack. I wouldn't say it's everyday but there are times when we're out and about or I need a quick snack to keep them occupied for a bit. Like most kids on this board, they also eat fresh fruit and veggies on a regular basis. This just isn't something that I can get worked up over.
DD gets one probably one per day most days. Today she had three. One this morning while we were running errands, and then two this afternoon while we walked around our town. She also ate mussels fra diavlo, artichokes, eggplant caponata and mozzarella today. And yesterday, she had two cheese sticks, a pouch and a fig bar for dinner.
Pouches are mostly the way DD will eat a veggie. Tonight was an exception; normally she is fairly picky.
