I'm aggravated with Home Depot (over grill assembly, long story by the short version is they are incompetent idiots), so we went to Lowes last night to order our vanity top for the bathroom update.
Originally I was going to just get a plain white solid surface counter, but it had to be special order due to the size (42"). It would be $300. However, once we got to Lowes I fell in love with a quartz counter top with porcelain sink... $775! Ooops...
I just didn't like the non stone options (even their granite was 'meh') they all looked *cheap* - which surprised me since usually even a solid surface material looks nice.
So, I justified it by saying we saved money on everything else - reused the toilet (it was replaced in 2011, just after we bought the place), reused the floor tile from overage on the basement, using a less expensive light fixture/faucet that we purchased in 2011 (before we realized that neither could be used in the bathroom the way it was), opted for the solid panel shower walls vs tile, etc.
I don't think I've ever *not* gone over budget on a project. Honestly, it was probably worth the splurge. You don't remodel a bathroom that often, so you might as well spend a bit more to get what you like. Plus quartz will look more high end which is always good for resale.

We ended up spending 1200 on my kids vanity top (more than our master bath!) bc none of the cheaper options looked good. In the end you have to look at it every day. Save money elsewhere. (Enabler!)

Thanks
I'm just happy that I found a mirror today without having to buy it online. I knew we'd never find a matching wood mirror and I didn't really want another dark metal 'thing' in there since all the rest of the hardware is ORB (roughly - or aged bronze depending on the manufacturer). We found one at Pier 1 which surprised me.
Here's the counter material we went with - wish I could find a larger picture with an actual finished piece...
