I usually get cheap-ish balcony seats, but in a perfect world I would sit in the center midway between the stage and the start of the balcony overhang.
ETA why: In the center so I have a good view of everything, close enough to see set and costume detail, far enough back to see all the action on the sides without craning. I'm not that concerned about sound/acoustics...I figure the theater is set up for me to hear well enough from anywhere.
Our seats are just right of center orchestra, on the aisle closest to the center. They're around 1/3 to 1/2 of the way back, at the start of the slight incline. This way I rarely have to worry about someone's head blocking my view. We also have a great full view of the stage.
We've had season tickets for a few years and I love our current seats. We'll have to keep buying season packages because I never want to let these seats go. We've sat closer, but often ended up with an obstructed view for one reason or another.
For Broadway houses I prefer the first three rows of the Mezzanine, as close to center as possible. For regional houses it really depends on the theatre & its sightlines.

I generally prefer the first few rows of the mezzanine/first balcony and towards the center. I am short and find that I can see better when I am up versus on the floor.
My opera tickets are first row center loge (second lowest balcony) My ideal tickets would be first row Founders Circle (lowest balcony) but those are for board members and cost $300.
