I would be embarrassed, but I like my house to be spotless....which isn't happening. We had guests over yesterday and things looked pretty nice. It's torn up again, though.
Some days recently, I would have faked my own death.

I voted "really really embarrassed". This is inspired by the fact that I'm having people clean my home tomorrow. I don't know how you people keep on top of the deep cleaning stuff! I fail at life.
I should probably quit the internet and focus on real life skills.
It's too challenging with two kids. I pick up the toys and try to dust/mop/super clean one room a day which means the whole house is never spotless at one time.
Right now, I'd be embarrassed but its not that bad. I usually keep it pretty clean though so I'd be annoyed that an unannounced visitor showed up when its messier than usual. And it always seems to happen that way! Why don't these visitors pop in after you just happened to clean.

I did a really quick clean of the living room and kitchen this morning. There is clutter from toys in the living room however. The bedrooms are okay but the bathrooms needed to be deep cleaned. I plan on doing that tomorrow. So basically, I'd ask them to hold it!
jfh How does one end up with all those unannounced visitors? That would drive me batty!
@pcloadletter Almost the same, but don't open my closets, lol.
Our neighborhood social circle is very close. Usually a random toddler wanders over to see Kai with parents following behind. I like it, but I'm embarrassed that people see how we actually live, lol. It's simultaneously forced me to be a bit neater and to let things go and not stress too much.
We had almost unannounced today. Youngest BIL stopped to see the kids. I had a 15 min window and got our downstairs picked up in 10. To me, that's not bad.
Be really embarrassed over the mess. I straighten every night before bed - put away toys, clean off counters, etc. but there's always a pile of mail in the kitchen, laundry that needs to be put away, and we really need to sweep/mop/vacuum more frequently. I was really good about it pre-kids, I would do a good clean of the kitchen, bathrooms etc. every Saturday morning, and then just maintain the rest of the week. Now I just can't find the motivation unless I'm the only one at home, which is never. I really want a cleaning service every other week or once a month because I think I'd be able to keep up with it better, but it haven't been able to convince my H. I've been tempted to ask for it as a Christmas or birthday present.

That makes sense and sounds nice for the kids! I vote you get the cleaning service!

That happened to us today with having to take care of my friends baby. I did say don't judge me for the state of my house . But basically if the kitchen is clean I am not very embarrassed. And it was clean!
I hate when there is clutter or when beds are not made. It's usually tidy but not necessarily clean. Depends on the day of the week as to how clean the bathrooms, floors, carpets, etc are.
We have a cleaning lady for deep cleaning and I keep the house picked up. My husband tells me it's not normal but it is just what I was used to growing up. Non of our friends have a picked up house and that doesn't bother me at all but I guess my husband is right, I am not normal!
It's almost always messy. We are both really bad about clutter. I would be even more embarrassed today because we've got a weeks worth of vacation laundry to deal with, suitcases half unpacked and all the baby stuff my H pulled from the attic this morning in random rooms.
We are in the embarassed camp too. We also have laundry everywhere. For a good stretch I was keeping up, but we went to the beach and it ruined my ambition. We now have clothes and our unpacked luggage cluttering our bedroom and the rest of our luggage sitting at the bottom of the steps ready to go upstairs.
Generally everything other than our master bathroom and bedroom is okay, not spotless but okay. I have to clean everything if I know we are getting guests, because I'm anal like that.
